This is a cute story about time travel and belonging. It sounds like it might be pretty over the top, but it's actually pretty well done.

A little younger-geared than I usually read, but once I adjusted my expectations accordingly I enjoyed it.

I loved The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and us girls are currently tearing through the Ivy and Bean series so I was thrilled to find this book geared toward my older daughter's age group (8-10). She says it is great.

When Miri's family moves into a new house she discovers an eye glass lens and is transported back in time to 1935. Same house, very different family. In the past Molly is trapped living with relatives she doesn't like and who definitely don't like her. Miri is going to change all that though because she's going to rescue Molly. If they can just figure out how to do it.

This book started out really well with great dialogue, description and some intriguing characters. The pacing was good and I was up super late reading one night because the book was hard to put down. However, the ending feels false and too easy. It is not inevitable and definitely contrived. The ending really ruined what would have otherwise been a great book. I Deux ex Machina to be sure. I'm all for magic, but it's also nice if there are real consequences and repercussions for characters, if magic doesn't solve ALL things.

Loved this book!!! This will be perfect for those imaginative 2nd and 3rd graders who can read just about everything and who still believe in magic, just a little bit.

Barrows does a nice job of exploring the consequences of time travel in an accessible way. It's complicated but the infinite looping of "if I didn't do that then, then I couldn't do this now" will fascinate kids. The magical resolution is harder to believe than the rest of the book, but I didn't care. The 7 year old in me was just too happy that it all worked out okay.

This was my absolute favorite book when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. That's why it's still on my favorite shelf.
