Reading this felt like holding my breath for five days. Wtf. Very intense, overwhelming, and jolting in terms of the realistic story & crime, and the alarming clarity of how broken the judicial system is, how tight a chokehold the patriarchy, class, and race have on our society. The ending was so perfect and clever. It’s supposed to reflect reality. This is such an incredible feat of a book. Hell yes.

okay so i’ll start with what i liked about the book. great writing, like i literally didn’t want to put the book down. BUT, i’m just a little confused on what the purpose of the story was. was this book supposed to be a commentary on true crime and podcasting? was this supposed to be on the court/legal system not believing women? was this about guilt/shame on young people/teenagers for keeping secrets? is this on racism and the legal/court system? i feel like there was too much focus on. i definitely like the book and i loved what it was saying but i feel like the message of the book was lost. i wanted more focus and i only got that focus in the second part of the book. if the first part of the book connected as well with the second part, i think it would’ve hit harder.

A fairly slow read although you have to keep reading because you definitely want to know what happens. A realistic and depressing book that reflects a lot on society, relationships, and the justice system.

In the end you never get any real answers and although realistic, the very depressing ending that the innocent does not receive justice is hard to swallow after all of the depressing elements of the story have unfolded. In the end there really is no wins.
