I have three words and an honorific for you: Nova and Ms. Marvel. Their interactions almost completely made this book for me. With a nice side of Miles Morales (who I am now going to have to find more of), and lady!Thor (who was AMAZING with Sam Wilson, I am right with Kamala on this ship). I loved the tiny nods to Sam's struggle to be accepted as Captain America, and the struggle of the adults to trust the kids while at the same time wanting to protect them. Basically, this book was amazing and I will definitely be reading more.

The first time I read this, just three years ago, I gave it 4+ stars. This time I was much less impressed. Downgrading to 3 stars.

[original review follows]
I'm actually tempted to give this 5 stars, but that would feel ridiculous.

I haven't loved everything Mark Waid has written, but he really knows how to handle these characters together. Beyond that, this book is witty at the right times, tongue-in-cheek at others, and makes several meta self-references throughout, mocking the boring white fanboys who refuse to accept Captain America, Spider-Man, Thor, or Ms. Marvel since they stopped being white or male.

The covers by Alex Ross are gorgeous as always, and now I'm much more eager to read more Mark Waid books (Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., and DareDevil especially, but open to suggestions!).

Mark Waid is really good at pacing a story, even a fairly generic one, as here. I'd probably even have given this one 4 stars, were the artwork not so terrible. The best thing going for this basic Marvel graphic novel is the inclusion of the beautiful Alex Ross covers.

What's with all these 3-star ratings? It seems I'm showing up to this comic for different reasons than most. The star of the show were the young folk, specifically the Ms. Marvel/Kid Nova interactions. Very fun. If you care for Ms. Marvel at all, I'm sure you'll love this (I didn't know Kid Nova coming in).
I continued to love Thor. She grows on me in everything I read. Others complained that she felt different than in her books, but I only read the first collection, where she was barely figuring out who she was, so I didn't notice so much. Her motivations seemed consistent with the character, so I was pleased.
Also: best Captain America I've seen yet.
So, um. Nothing not to like here, as far as I can see. I even liked the big bad in the second half, a character who usually does _nothing_ for me.

This may be the book that turns me onto the Avengers at last.

This was kind of fun. The villain was again boring as f*** but I find the new avengers interesting, especially the younger ones.
