I feel it’s important to qualify this review; I rate books based on what they mean to me, not how good they are. Often times, I feel the two line up, but not in this case. From the perspective of quality, this book deserves a 4 minimum, even if you’re a little stingy with your 5’s. Very experimental, strong rhythm in the language, and many poems are exceptionally powerful.

I honestly have no idea what I read-- then again, I've never been that big on digging meanings out of things. There was something bigger-than-the-universe to Hayes' words while being utterly basic. His words felt like mine in some sort of shared breath, as if he had taken them and made art out of them. Then there were other words and portraits of which I knew nothing about, black-and-white racism, black Brothers and Sisters, a history of slavery and oppression that still silently leaches through. I don't know o3o
