This was a wonderful book. Robinson is a master at creating characters. And the plot was very believable and interesting. This is the first book of his I have read and I am dying to read more.
When a reservoir dries up in Yorkshire, England, an old skeleton is found. It is determined early on that the it is a young woman who had been murdered. It is up to Inspector Banks, along with DC Annie Cabbot to figure out what happened 50 years ago. Robinson switches back and forth between present time and a first person account of what happened 50 years ago. As the past story unfolds, we see how Banks and Cabbot piece together what happened by their investigative skills. Banks is a very likable character who is flawed in very human ways. And Annie as his counterpart is perfect. In the past story, Gloria and Gwen are two girls who you can identify with even without understanding all they had to go through back then. This is a wonderful story and I recommend it to any mystery fan out there.

During a very dry spell, the Thornfield Reservoir drains, leaving the remnants of an old, flooded village behind. A young lad exploring what remains of the old buildings discovers part of a body, and Banks is sent to investigate with the help of a local DS called Annie. As the pair examine events in the present, the story of the past unfolds in flashback form.
This is a slight departure in style from the usual Banks' books, as it effortlessly slips between present past - specifically the Second World War - and present. As ever, it was very enjoyable. Robinson is a great storyteller and I like the way Banks' work and private life are both explored - it really brings the story to life.

An excellent detective novel with a well done dual time frame as the story switches from the present to life in a Yorkshire village during the Second World War. A complex puzzle with interesting characters and a likeable detective pairing.

terrible and problematic. made me angry. sexualising and discriminatory and disgusting views on other people. threw in the trash so it will be burned and i will not be part in someone else reading it.
