i was admittedly a lil skeptical before reading this book bc of the hype, but i have to say, now that ive read it, it's hilarious in a satirical yet scarily realistic way.

the author tackled so many things in such a fun age--race, class, culture, white feminism--yet also managed to somehow ground the story in its characters, who were imbued w/ surprising depth and multidimensionality; emira's quarter life crisis was particularly realistic and relatable.

i also loved the deep dive into different dynamics of white liberalism, feminism, and fragility, and amazed at how reid was able to cohesively weave them all tgt into this subtly concerning yet hilarious book.

Haha I loved this so much. When I say I literally was cry laughing during the thanksgiving scene and then AGAIN during the news interview; chefs kiss.

This book was so RAW and relatable. As a girl in her 20s watching her friends have babies, get engaged, graduate uni, get promoted, buy houses while I’m over here babysitting and struggling to even get into a program at school I appreciated this book so so much.

I thought the mental health rep was incredible, I thought she captured anxiety and fear and lonliness so perfectly.

Discussions on race are so incredibly important and necessary and as a white person I’m thankful for this story and the new perspective it’s given me.

However, I can’t with a right mind give this the full 5 stars. The weight and body image comments and discussions were not appreciated even though I understand it came from the characters insecurities. Also I just can’t get behind a frown as woman being jealous over her babysitters boyfriend; men ain’t shit, woman up you know? 😂

I agree with other reviewers that the ending was underwhelming (all the discussions the book opened were abruptly sealed), but up until the last 10 or so pages, I was extremely impressed by the complex character dynamics. I loved this.

This was totally different than I expected in a wonderful way.
This book is about people doing the right things for the wrong reasons and the wrong things for the right reasons - or rather doing what they believe to be the right things but for the wrong reasons, or the wrong things for what they believe to be the right reasons.
I loved how this book took characters and put their flaws centre stage but didn't make them hateable necessarily. The characters felt real in a way that a lot of literary characters usually fall short of.
Also, the title works SO WELL with the plot. It takes about the struggles of being a teenager and the struggles of being in your 20s, and 30s... its about how its hard to be any age and fun to be any age. How we can make mistakes at any age.
If you like a good character-driven book, I highly recommend this one!

(Also, Briar was my favourite part of this novel by far. I love this kid.)
