A compulsively readable book about a Russian scientist who is released to work in a top secret radiation lab. This book is heartwarming and hopeful which is very bizarre to say since it is also about radiation accidents.

This book is very good at describing the psychological strain people felt in the Cold War USSR and particularly the pressures put on scientists. However the narrative flow was frequently disrupted by the use of British slang. I found it very distracting and annoying.

Hot damn. I’m reading Natasha Pulley’s backlist and so far, all 5 stars. Pulley does such a good job at writing an engaging storyline and characters. I experienced various emotions while reading (I teared up so many times). The pacing is good and I liked the very slow burn relationship between Valery and Shenkov.
