It took me years to finally get around to reading this book and now that I have, I can say with confidence that it is one of the best fantasy series (I know that's a bold thing to say when I've only read the first book). This is mainly due to the world building and characters that inhabit every chapter of this book.

It can be a long read with the pace dragging at times but there's so much involved that it doesn't make me like the book any less. Just something you have to push through.

And it'll probably take me a while to get through the others but who knows, maybe Winds of Winter will finally be out by then.

“‘I gave you nothing,’ Tyrion said. ‘Words.’”

“‘Most of my kin are bastards,’ he said with a wry smile, ‘but you’re the first I’ve had to friend.’”

“‘You have juice on your face, Your Grace,’ Arya said.”

“The original pommel was a bear’s head. […] For you I thought a white wolf more apt.”

I wasn’t ready to read this book when I started it, and thought I might end up adding it to “The Shelf of the Abandoned”, despite its reputation. Turns out it was easier to read than I’d ever thought from this kind of book, and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

A little part of me feels that it’s sort of like a reality show with all the petty people, the drama and the backstabbing. A bigger part of me loved so many of the interactions and how the characters evolved.

To read the next book, though, I’ll need one of you to hand me a pair of sharp scissors or something, so I can snip off a few testicles.

A very well thought-out fantasy world with elaborate twists. The characters are awfully young and the rape/murder scenes are super graphic and oftentimes grossly gratuitous, but I enjoyed the world Martin built.

I listened to this for a Fantasy genre study. It was OK. I didn't finish it in time for the genre study, but I did want to finish it. It was 28 discs, and I couldn't just quit.

Having already watched the series, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The HBO series followed the book very closely. Because there are so many characters, I found it helpful to refer to online resources to keep track of them. The author goes into a large amount of detail which could have been reduced. He also jumped around a lot to keep the different plot lines progressing which I found frustrating, and this was mirrored in the HBO series. A great way to review the s Erie’s, and get a better understanding of the depth of the characters and their motivations.

This book has definitely lived up to the hype. I listened to this on Audiobook and while I didn’t enjoy the narrator I still enjoyed the story. It really helped that I had watched the show before reading this book because there are so many characters and plot lines. I was able to put faces to them and see the book play out like it does with the tv show. With that being said the first book and the first season are almost identical. I still really enjoyed this book. Not sure if I’ll continue reading the rest but I am still gonna watch the tv show to see what happens.
