I really, really liked this book. As an Austen fan but not having read Mansfield Park, I thought I might be missing some fundamentals, but this reads well as a stand-alone book. It stuck with me for days after I finished it. I thought the author successfully managed to capture the language of Jane Austen. The mystery was well-constructed and kept me guessing, but all the information was there for someone more mystery-savvy to figure out if they want! I wish there were more novels like this, reimagining classic novels in a murder-mystery style.

Whereas most Austen retellings seem to come from a place of love for the characters, I felt that "Murder at Mansfield Park" came from the author's dislike of the characters and the desire to see them suffer. While well-written, I didn't find this to be very enjoyable and really had to push myself to finish it.

Really didn't think I was going to read Murder at Mansfield Park but I was on a plane with my ebooks and figured why not cross one more book off my TBR list. The author takes Mansfield Park by Jane Austen and completely turns it around. This time Fannie isn't the sweet (yet annoying) character from Austen's novel, instead she is a selfish, cruel heiress who of course gets murdered. Since Fannie was never a favorite of mine in the original, I had no problem with her being bumped off. Overall a nice way to spend some time when stuck on a plane.

Mary Crawford and her brother Henry visit their sister at Mansfield Park. There they meet the familiar household of Mansfield Park including the manipulative Fanny Price, who will do anything to marry a man with a large fortune. She is, however, unofficially betrothed to Edmund Norris, a humble man who Mary comes to love. Fanny makes many enemies, including a murderer who ends her life. Sir Thomas sends for a thief sniffer to find out who the murderer is.

At heart a good mystery, and a believable alternate story for this Jane Austen classic.

Read a chapter, it didn't hold my attention. The thought of getting to the end was very sad. I abandoned it gleefully.

I'm more used to Agatha Christie and a body by the second chapter, so it took longer than I was expecting to get to the murder, but the book was great fun from that point onwards. A nice blend of Austenesque writing style (including aspects clearly taken from or influenced by her letters) and murder-mystery.
