This is the third book in the Tarot Sequence, urban fantasy set in an alternate world with Atlantean magic wielders and strong found-family elements. Content warnings apply, partly because the main character has trauma in their past (trying to avoid anything more specific here), but the darker elements are balanced by humor and by the friendships between the characters.
I love the characters. I love the interactions between the characters. I love the way the characters are never pushed aside for the plot--even though that plot has plenty of heft and flair. In anticipation of this third installment, I re-re-read books one and two, and found them both still excellent. My expectations for "The Hourglass Throne" were therefore very high. It did not disappoint.
I am smitten by Edwards's found family. I love so many of the ties between them, but first and foremost and always, the bond between Rune and Brand.
4.5 out of 5 companion stars.
About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).
