3.98 AVERAGE

I didn't think I was going to like the Hon. Frederick Stanton as a Heyer hero, but I did. I'm pretty amazed at her ability to make an average (well average for a novel about wealthy, upper class Regency era English people) guy into a dashing and desirable hero. And I continue to be in awe of Heyer's ability to slip in comedic scenes. Her drawing room comedy has few rivals in my mind.

Sweet and fluffy. I'd give it an extra half star for the delightful and ridiculous Regency slang if I could - found myself giggling at it constantly.

Loved this one. The heroine is sweet and likeable, but Freddy is the character that really shines. I really wish Masterpiece or someone would make us some Heyer inspired miniseries. This title would be a great twisty story with fun sub-plots for a movie or miniseries.

2024 re-read: audiobook version. Also excellent. Still love Freddy!

I loved this book! Its the first one of Georgette Heyer’s that I have read, and I enjoyed it significantly more than I as expecting. The characters are flawed but loveable! My boyfriend also guessed who she was going to end up with before I did, so he has been crowing about that lol. :)

DEFINITELY the cutest thing I've read in a long time. So sweet and heartfelt and laugh out loud funny! I want to read all of her other books now <3

3.75 ish?

I loved Freddy but skipped over alot of the 'odious' descriptions

Not my favourite Heyer (some parts were incredibly boring and long) but reading Freddy knock the shit out of Jack made up for all of it

The good parts (I.e Kitty dragging Freddy sightseeing around London was easily the funniest section for me), the subversive hero (he’s a stickler for fashion and is incredibly friendly) and that terrific ending stopped this from being 3 stars for me.

Freddy is such an excellent hero — the power Georgette posses to literally popularise a trope, the regency rake, and then write a book that turns it all around and makes the rake the shit-heel and the best friend who is persistently loyal and helpful the actual love interest.

Also, the sweetest love confession(s) ever:

“What I mean is, like you to have everything you want. Wished it was me, and not Jack, that’s all.”

“You don’t feel you could marry me instead? Got no brains, of course, and I ain’t a handsome fellow, like Jack, but I love you. Don’t think I could ever love anyone else.”

And when she starts to cry he begs her not to, saying: “Can’t bear you not to be happy! I won’t say another word. Never thought there was any hope for me. Just wanted to tell you.”

What heart doesn’t just MELT for this adorable little dandy who has run around trying to help Kitty without her ever asking to and without any expectation, but to be just plain kind? We need more romances like this.
