"Remember that there is only one important time, and that time is now. The most important one is always the one you are with. And the most important thing is to do good or the one who is standing at your side. For these, my dear boy, are the answers to what is most important in this world. This is why we are here."
Based on a short story by Tolstoy, young Nikolai ponders three questions about life and asks his friends each one, but their answers seem to be what is important to themselves and not necessarily what is important in life. Nikolai ones in death of answers and finds them where he didn't expect to, and finding wisdom along the way.
A lovely retelling of a story I have not in fact read, but appreciate all the same.

I honestly like this children's book retelling of Tolstoy's short story more than the original. Beautiful art, too!
Definitely thought-provoking and may be quite challenging for the younger set to understand, but beautifully told and illustrated. This is the kind of book I'll be pondering the rest of the day.

A beautiful adaptation of a classic short story. I cried a little at the end. It is a profound message and those are the best kind for children. The art is also wonderful, realistic yet artfully light and airy. The illustrations are done in watercolor so they add a very majestic and unique visual.

This wouldn't be half as good without the illustrations. The art carries the story and because of that, the story works. Lovely.
My favorite children’s picture book this year.
