Riveting!

A fantastic tale of many fierce, funny, and amazing dragons. I love the character development that went into these fascinating creatures. Even dragons can be relatable!

this book is so very much about fate and it does that so very well — both within the plot, where having two main characters with the power of prophecy means it’s impossible to tell how many of the prophecies are self-fulfilling, and on a meta level, because people who have read wings of fire know how this story ends and the entire thing is a slowly tightening noose. not to be like "everything i read is exactly the same," but it's the closest WoF has gone to a greek tragedy. (the final arctic scene in particular… the fact that you know it's over as soon as darkstalker tells him to be quiet... gutting.
Spoilerno pun intended.
)

4 stars because the characters didn’t totally leap off the page the way so many WoF characters do. the fathom/darkstalker friendship especially was built up in the second series to a level that fell flat here. + most prominently, there was never really a point where i thought darkstalker might stay “good,” and sure, i already knew the ending, but is it really a perfect tragedy unless i can actively and achingly hope it might end well?

NEW FAVORITE BOOK ALERT.

I’m so emotionally wrecked by this. For the first time in a while truly don’t have anything to criticize, it was just a masterpiece, and my tragedy loving ass ate up every minute. This was the Revenge of the Sith of the WOF series and I mean that in the best possible way.

Wow! The author takes this character's story and really makes you like him even though you know from the series that he goes on to do bad things. It shows all the things that happen in his life to lead him to that point. I love the development and storyline of the other characters too. Fathom, Indigo, and Clearsight are all just as intriguing.

I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did! The tension kept me hooked, and I loved the complexity of each of the POV character's motivations.

In trying to read all the WOF books, of course I also have to read the spinoffs. And you know what? I loved this even more than I love the main series. Things got dark and surprisingly mature here! We got to see Darkstalker's inevitable fall from grace and imprisonment; how and why he disemboweled his own father; why his girlfriend and best friend teamed up to plot against him, how the road to hell is always paved in good intentions... Seriously excellent. I wish the rest of this series was as good! The reveal about his secret spells was particularly gut wrenching (pun not intended).
