I didn't love this as much as the original Wings of Fire series, but it was interesting to learn the backstory of Darkstalker. I am glad that I read it after Escaping Peril, because it provided necessary information. It's a good filler while waiting for the next in the Wings of Fire series.
I LOVED this book and could not put it down! At first, it didn’t really make sense to me, but then once I started reading it… it was amazing. It is telling the backstory of Darkstalker, the villain in Phyrria and it is so interesting and so amazing! So is the twist at the end! And at the beginning! It is all so good, highly recommend if you are a Wings of Fire fan like me :)
I do enjoy a villain origin story. This book follows the life of Darkstalker up until his imprisonment and the events of the Jade Mountain arc. This tale is told through the perspective of Darkstalker, Clearsight and Fathom.
Hearing the story from multiple sides was refreshing. I was prepared to hate this book because I do not like Darkstalker - he's so evil. But watching the story unfold through the eyes of his one true love and best friend was the fresh take needed to appreciate this story.
While audiences knew exactly where this story ended. I was not ready for how much sympathy I would feel for both Clearsight and Fathom who desperately wanted to believe in Darkstalker.
Shout out my best friend Dayne who's inbox will continue to get flooded. If you read this, you a real one

Bedtime pandemic reading has us going through every single Wings of Fire... and now that we're waiting for new ones to come out, we're going through the Legends books. This story though was doomed from the start and we all know how it's going to end (not well for Darkstalker and Clearsight and their "soulmate" love) though it was lovely finding out what happened to Fathom... but otherwise, a solid win for the dragon loving kids - as an adult, I found the story rather meh. I only read it aloud at night because the kids insisted...
In trying to read all the WOF books, of course I also have to read the spinoffs. And you know what? I loved this even more than I love the main series. Things got dark and surprisingly mature here! We got to see Darkstalker's inevitable fall from grace and imprisonment; how and why he disemboweled his own father; why his girlfriend and best friend teamed up to plot against him, how the road to hell is always paved in good intentions... Seriously excellent. I wish the rest of this series was as good! The reveal about his secret spells was particularly gut wrenching (pun not intended).
Yes, I know this is a kids book. My kids are all homeschooled and it was a popular series among their co-op classmates. I picked up the first boxed set, hoping my kids would eventually join their friends in reading the books.
Then I picked up book one and started reading....
...eventually seeing there being Legends books and Winglets, I had to find out the order to read them chronologically.
Darkstalker is the first book as far as when things take place. Now I've only ready book 1 of the main series, so I don't know if any of this has any importance later in the series, but considering how it ends perhaps it does. Like other reviewers commented, this book does start slow, but it is introducing the characters, and all introductions take place slowly. The neat thing is that each chapter is told from one character's point of view, which pulls the reader in further, and likely improves the experience for the reader. b
Bring on Legends 2 and the remainder of the main series....

Like watching a slow motion train wreck, or a well written Episodes 1-3. If you have read books 6-10 of the main series then you know how this book is going to end, but it was still interesting and hearth wrenching getting there. I very much enjoyed this one.
