I appreciate the lyricism of the writing and how Vuong contrasts it with visceral imagery of war, drugs, and sex - but it got too much for me at times. Just not what I like to read, but very good writing. I wish it was shorter - the beginning was very impactful and I wanted to recommend it to everyone but by the point I had about 3 hours left of the audiobook I was ready to be done.

Wow. What a force of a book, it made me feel in the rare and magical way that masterfully crafted books sometimes do. You can really tell that Vuong is a poet that decided to grace us with a novel.

I found all of the cross cutting a bit tough at the beginning, but by the time I made it to the second part I came to appreciate it as a powerful tool in Vuongs literary arsenal.

Ocean Vuong’s writing may be challenging to follow and understand, but that reflects the nature of memories.

The title alone is striking and hints at the weight of the book. Such a heavy, gorgeously written story. The author packs so much into each sentence, I found myself rereading things over and over, to fully digest each word and its implications. Sometimes this style of writing feels too over the top for me, but it was just the right amount.
Trevor and Little Dog's relationship is written with such care, humor, sadness. Lan and Rose... their stories are haunting. I read this book as my grandmother's health began declining and it hit close to home.
I listened to an interview with the author after reading the book and I think they do such a wonderful job of writing autobiographical fiction. It feels very real; I appreciate their sentiment of not wanting to write a memoir and profit off the trauma of their loved ones. Overall a quiet, beautiful, disturbing, memorable novel about the overwhelming sadness present in the poor queer Vietnamese American experience.

this was so, so raw. raw in the way your skin feels after getting sun burnt - hot, with a reassurance that after the initial burn, even the brush of your own clothes is going to make your skin sting for a couple of days because of it's rawness. but, reading this was also like being swept up in a river where everything flows so gently until the current picks up and you remember that you're in a river and you've never really known how to float, but you can swim, but the cold is eating at your skin and how long can you go?

i already mentioned it but vuong's writing is so captivating and raw and there were several lines that made me cry, but the type of crying that builds up without you knowing and then suddenly you're crying silently. i think i've tapped too much, but this was so so raw without it being tryhard.
