The character development was poignant and focused on the emotional journey of self-improvement. I greatly enjoyed the high level of vocabulary used—I found myself looking up definitions despite normally knowing every word in books! Eleanor’s relationships with other characters is amusing and touching as you watch her come into her own individual.

i loved the character development and the discussions of mental health in this story. certainly didn’t expect abuse to play such a big part.

A beautiful and addictive read, i adored Elenor and her internal monologues, and found myself both laughing and crying at times. I wish i could read it again for the first time. The only thing i would say is the pacing is a little slow at times, but stick with it, her story is worth it.

A very smooth read, quite gripping, didn't take too long

Pros:
- the writing flowed nicely and made it easy to read. The dialogue always felt realistic and the story carried along nicely.
- it also had quite an original premise which was executed well and I got caught up in seeing how it would all turn out.
and I'm glad it turned out well

- the side characters, Raymond, Laura, Bob, etc. were all well developed and made it feel like a little slice of life.

Cons:
- Didn't really love Eleanor (though the name didn't help) and while feeling vaguely bad for her, i definitely didn't 'sob and sob' like the one reviewer did. Some bits did hit too hard and just made me feel bad. The tone really reminded me of 'A man called Ove' and it was given to me by the same person. Unfortunately I don't think I'm a massive fan of this type of book really - the reality is too painful for me, too personal.

So I think my main disappoint was that I didn't feel much for the book and I won't be reading it again I'm afraid, though it was good for a break after the complicated 'Ninth house' book.

Things I liked:
• Eleanor’s character by the end was really charming and you can see some very clear very developed character building/development.
• The characters all feel real. You begin to miss them shortly after reading the book.
•The plot twist I wasn’t expecting at all, took me totally by surprise even when I was looking for a twist.
• The plot isn’t generic or unoriginal, it’s truly something I had never read before.
• The relationship between Eleanor and the potential love interest is left ambiguous at the end, allowing us to either imagine them as a working couple or perhaps as a symbiotic platonic love, which is very beautiful in my opinion.

Things I didn’t like:
• Eleanor’s character in the beginning was UNBEARABLE. I know it’s part of the story however, the sheer amount of secondhand anger I had while reading the first 10 chapters or so is immeasurable. It made it difficult to continue the book, but overall I’m glad I continued.
