This is one of the best books I have read for a while, loved the storyline and the mythological characters although the twins did annoy me in parts.can't wait for the next book in the series!

A young adult fantasy packed with everything, and I mean everything. Not only magic and mythology and history and alchemy and necromancy and dinosaurs. Yeah dinosaurs. Oh and religion. The Book of Abraham is a major part of this story because in it the recipe for immortality is found.

Nicholas Flamel and his wife, who were real people by the way, are attacked by the original inhabitants of the earth, mythological gods who you will recognize, The gods are looking for the Codex, or Book of Abraham. The Flamel's young friends, Josh and Sophie who are twins, get drawn into the fight. Of course Josh and Sophie are the prophesied gold and silver ones who will save or destroy the world. More to come in the second book. I told you this was a fantasy. Fantasy: always has a prophesy and a quest and at least one hero and a bad guy or two and generally a wise man or two. They are all in here along with about every mythological or fictional fantasy character you have heard of, except Harry. (Probably a copyright thing there.)

I enjoyed this book a lot. I did get a bit tired of the description and explanation the author felt necessary to bring people up to speed on the history of magic and mythology. I also dislike mixing dinosaurs with fantasy. At one point I felt like I was suddenly reading Jurassic Park including the SUV with killer creatures peering in the windows. Over all I recommend it to folks who enjoy a good fantasy. And be sure to read the end notes that tell you what parts are historical.

This was a nice little book, but I started getting a big bored in the second half. I'm not sure exactly why, but it just didn't quite completely catch me for some reason. I might read the sequels, but I might not.

A book I read as a child. I often wondered why I wasn't with the percy jackson crowd and upon remembering this it makes sense. This was my fun rooted in mythology series. A lot of my core memories of the book centers around this first one, so everything felt just on the edge of stressful, I felt impatient knowing what was to come and occur but overall an easy and exciting read.

Really excellent read. The author, who is an authority on different myths and folklore, has weaved together different myths, beliefs, and legends from many different sources into the storyline. The story has elements of da Vinci code secrets, the different myths, and also real people, places, and events that make it crackle right along. Anyone who enjoys fantasy reads will enjoy.

I was torn about which category to put this book in, because it may think it's for young adults, but the writing is quite young. I'm going to read the second one, to see what happens, but given that it took until about p. 150 for things to stop being predictable and get interesting, I'm not expecting a life-changing read.
That said, for a younger reader, perhaps 10 or 12, this would probably be a fun read.

Overall great story that continues on in a series. The relationship between the twins is a little too close and the book says the word twins alot. Like we get it, they are twins. Bothered me a little but didn't change the story.

Bij het herlezen (17/12/2013) vind ik het boek wel nog leuk, maar geen 5* meer.
