I loved the story. I love how Michael Scott combines mythology, legends, fantasy and reality. The story takes place over two days, but it feels like you've really known the characters a long time. I enjoy following the twins, who are very down-to-earth and relatable as a reader. Even though I'm supposed to be in the age category that no longer enjoys YA-series, I'll be sure to read all the other parts as well. The ending makes you want to pick up the sequel straight away.

It was an ok book. Somewhat boring at points and somewhat interesting at others. I found the two main characters to be fairly boring but overall not a terrible book. A pretty typical teen fiction book. But its at least good enough for me to continue the series.

Interesting concept. I'd never heard of Nicholas Flamel or the legends/myths surrounding him except for references to him in Harry Potter. I had to Google it to realize that yes, he's actually a real person. But, like many real people from history, odd stories and legends have been attached to them, and sometimes people think that they might even still be alive, hence the series title "the Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel."

The story itself reminds me a bit of Neil Gaiman's American Gods and Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips. But, then you mix in a bit of classic fantasy, where an unsuspecting child/young adult comes into powers that they didn't know they had, and suddenly the are fighting the forces of Good and Evil, and the world lies in the balance. Very much reminds me of David Eddings' works, the Belgariad and the Mallorean.

This is only the first book, but it kept me interested enough that I'll start on the next one. I wouldn't say it was amazing, but it's unique and different. There are lots of strong female characters, which is always wonderful to see. Thankfully, there isn't any cloying romance yet, and I sure hope that it stays that way. Instead, we've got a brother and sister that are in danger of being pulled apart by the forces around them. Oh, and it's all set in the present, which makes your brain think, hey, this might actually be possible, just as there might actually be a Hogwarts out there.

This is another casualty of 2020. This is exactly the kind of book I love - and I barely made it through. Instead of gleefully reading to find out what happens next, I dread read to just finish. There was just too much destruction and death (big battle scenes). Maybe in a few years I can finish the series, but today it feels too dark.
