The Alchemyst

I enjoyed the mythology and the weaving together of fantasy and history but I found the story itself flat, stale and formulaic in a linearly predictable way. It pains me but I won't be continuing with this series.
adventurous funny medium-paced

The Alchemyst was a fun and quick read. It is a youth book and would have a long way to go to rise to the high standard set by the Harry Potter books but it was entertaining.

I enjoy the re-imagining of historical situations and, like the Percy Jackson books, this book brings a variety of personalities from mythology as well as some real historical figures into the story in the modern era.

The book ends with a definite cliff hanger. I wasn't sure when I started reading whether I'd be interested in the sequels but now that I've finished, I can hardly wait to find out what happens next.

I love Granny Dora :)

An interesting book, and enjoyable. I'm curious about the next books.

I picked up this book looking for a story with the same feel as Harry Potter. What I got was something far different, but still very good. The Alchemyst is about Nicholas Flamel, a man who discovered a book to make himself immortal a long time ago. Nicholas and his wife guard the book from those who would want to destroy the world (as bad guys often try to do). Their main enemy in the story is Dr. John Lee who is also very, very old and wants to take the book for himself and for those he serves. The other two main characters are Sophie and Josh, teen, twin sister and brother. They get caught up in the mess of the epic battle over the book.
This book was a lot of fun to read. The world building in it is excellent. You can imagine every location they visit in vivid detail in your head. The characters are also wonderful. Each one has many different facets and grows throughout the story. While there are some slow parts, where the detailed description gets in the way of the flow of the story, this book is still an great read! Anyone who loves children/YA fantasy stories should pick up this book. Enjoy! ^^
