Read- June 2020 for the MakeYourMythTaker Readathon (Mercenary- inspired by history) and KPOP Readathon (SHINee-All Day All Night- Read a book either during the day or night)
- This book has been on my personal TBR for years after seeing it in my high school library and the entire series recently became available through my libraries ebook system so I figured now would be a great time to pick them up.
I actually started reading it quite a few weeks ago and managed to get around 100 pages into the ebook back then and whilst I was enjoying it I'm not the biggest fan of ebooks so I don't tend to pick them up very often. Which is why I was left with a major dilemma this morning when I woke up and realised that my hold for the the book actually ran out at midnight tonight. Now I could have easily just let the hold run out and borrow it again but I didn't want to risk that in case the hold list for it was really long and I wouldn't have got it back for months which meant I had to essentially read almost all of this today. I'm glad that I did push through with it though because I think reading the story in one go made me enjoy it so much more.
In the Alchemyst we follow Josh and Sophie, twins who are currently staying in San Francisco and who are working in a book store and coffee shop respectively for the summer in order to save up for a car. They have led fairly unassuming lives but that all changes when they make a big discovery. Nick Flemming, the owner of the book shop is actually Nicholas Flamel, an alchemist from 1330 who hold the key to immortality. He has been chased for hundreds of years by Dr John Dee who wants to get his hands on The Codex, a book written by Abraham the Mage which holds the secret to bring back the race known as the Dark Elders.
Our story starts with Sophie and Josh getting wrapped up in an adventure when John Dee discovers Flamels whereabouts and steals The Codex as well as Flamels wife Perenelle. Flamel soon starts to realise that Josh and his twin sister Sophie may be the key to a prophecy from The Codex about the saving or destruction of the Earth. It is then a race against time to figure out what the group can do to try and stop John Dee and figure out the truth of the Prophecy.
I truly enjoyed this book a lot and I'm so glad I didn't give up on it. The story took some interesting turns and went places I wasn't really expecting so needless to say I'm very excited for the second book so I can see where the story takes us.

It still boggles my mind that the entire book is 2 days.
The book had a great concept but I thought the writing was really terrible. I was especially irked by the mention of historical events and how the characters somehow had a part in them. It seemed so forced. Overall it was terribly boring and the descriptive language was not engaging or interesting. I found myself skipping paragraphs just to finish.

I guess I shouldn't judge a book from its cover. When I saw the cover I don't know but I thought this book wasn't going to catch my eye. But then I decided I must give it a try. And I was impressed. I loved the characters , especially the descriptions of Hecate and the Morrigan. I loved how Mr.Scott describe the last one tall, imposing and covered with crow feathers. I enjoyed the battles between Dr. John Dee and Nicholas Flamel. Also, I think that Scathach would be a friend of mine , if she actually existed.! Now, about the tweens. Sometimes I found Josh a little over-protective to his sister or too suspicious. On the other hand, Sophie was more relaxed and maybe too rational. But the brother and sister love was very obvious. What's more, I believe I was most fascinated with the author's insistence (if it's the proper word to set it )with the scents. Every time I read I thought I was in an exotic place and the scents were very intense. Finally, I liked Perenelle too but I'm a little concerned, I think maybe she'll do something in the next books. I don't know , call it a feeling! this book deserves 4 stars or more ! Nevertheless, I would give 5 but I'd like to read the next books:)
I seemed to enjoy this book more than others did. Though I do have to agree with others about things being repetitive and characters being somewhat annoying but I did not feel that to the extent others do. It’s a YA book, the characters are suppose to be 15 and that’s how they act. I think people a lot of times read way to much into a book and forget that it’s not true. I thought this book had great potential but didn’t quite live up to it. There were a lot of parts that I thought he could’ve done more and had hoped he would’ve. It’s not a bad book but defiantly longer than it needed to be. It’s suppose to be about Nicholas Flamel (picked up because of HP) but it is more about the twins. I would read the next one just to see what he does with it.
Early on it seems like the author is playing spin that wheel of tropes and cliches. By the end nothing on the wheel is even left to pick from.
Maybe 3 1/2. I enjoyed it, but it never grabbed me. I never felt that draw to not put it down, where I had to know right then what was happening. But at the same time I never felt bored, like I needed to put it down either. I will probably finish the series one day.
