DNF about 1/4 of the way through. I’m not rating, because I can’t tell if the writing was poor or if it just wasn’t for me. It was weird (much like a lot of fantasy) & seemed to be combining magic, science & really strange spirituality. It’s rare for me to DNF, but this one just wasn’t doing it for me.
I read this book in English.
Several years ago, I read it in Indonesian version from Matahati publisher when I was in my junior high school. One day, I just decided to buy the English version because I want to read it and prove that this is the best series (at least, for me).
I don't know why this book needs to advertise themselves as "mentioned in Harry Potter". I mean, this book itself have great references to mythology.
The story revolves around the twins, Josh and Sophie; the book keepers, Nicholas and Perenelle; the necromancer, Dr. Dee; and several supporting character, such as the Elder (Hekate, Bastet, and the Morrigan) and the Next Generation (Scatty and the Witch of Endor). When I wrote it down, I still in awe that I remember all this character hahaha.
Josh and Sophie supposed to be awakened to save the world. But in the process, the Dark Elder fought with the Good Elder and left Josh not awakened. Josh felt useless and could not help Sophie when she needed him the most. Reading it for the second time makes me realized that being twins is hard, especially if you feel left out.
Nicholas also being not helpful just told several truths. In the end of this book, Josh kept questioning his choice whether Nicholas was the good one or the bad one.
I guess as you are being much older, you'll feel this book is not as white or black, it has many gray areas about choosing. You also know why some people are easy to manipulate because simply you don't know the whole truth.
I'll give it five stars all over again.

Read this book in 5 days. Thoroughly enjoyed. Listened to the audio book as well as read it in print format.
I read this book when it first came out and because there is talk of the movie being in production currently, I thought I would re-read it so I could remember what happens.
I feel like YA generally has evolved a lot since 2007 so I don’t think this book would hold up as well if it were written today. Dialogue is a bit cheesy, the main characters are a bit one dimensional, there’s probably too many pop culture references (many of which I probably wouldn’t have gotten when I first read the book) and it is just by no means a stellar book. But I had a lot of fun reading it and might get into the whole series if I’m honest.

While it is most definitely written for a YA audience, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It is filled with historical, legendary, & mythological characters that make the librarian in me jump for joy! The only complaint I have is that there are almost too many characters/mythologies in the story. I did get a bit mixed up in the middle & had to go back and reread. Otherwise it was a thrilling story! Now I just have to get the rest of the series!
buku 1 dr seri nicholas flamel yg terdiri dr 6 buku. stlh baca menurutku ini jauh lebih menarik dibanding seri fablehaven ataupun seri percy jackson krn gk membuat ak bosan ataupun ngantuk. menarik idenya...
i forgot how fast-paced this series is... the whole fiasco that happened in the first book literally only happened in two days. to think about the things the twins went through and accomplished in two days--run away with two complete strangers, meet with more or less four goddesses and other beings, sophie turned into a whole magician in one day--really made me evaluate my life in which i try to complete mundane house chores and my to-do-list at my job... and i can't even do that well or fulfilled them completely.. really shows you what kind of person i am (a failure)
nicholas flamel reminds me so much of albus dumbledore: hey i know you're just teenagers but due to some stupid prophecy i need you to save the world! however i wont tell everything to you because you're just kids ;) ngl if they are really best friends i can see why and also i cant fathom the fact that out of all names, nicholas chose to go with nick fleming. nicholas flamel, nick fleming. bestie i thought you've been living in hiding for hundreds years! idk man choose better name maybe that way that john dee guy wont find you that easy. adam sounds nicer than nick imo
all in all still pretty fun! i enjoyed this more when i read it the first time which is why i downgraded the rating but i still had fun

I feel like this book could have been really good, but it was too slow moving and didn’t draw me in. There was very little plot and the characters didn’t have any depth. I won’t be reading the rest of the series.

I read this series as it first came out so it’s interesting to read again as I’m older!
A fun, juvenile read. Couldn't wait to read the sequels even though the prose was a little cliche at times. Imaginative, action-packed book.
