The only way I could bring myself to get through this book was to notate every single thing that peeved me off. It was just... Bad is not the word? I would be okay with it if this book was simply bad. But it was a tease, is what it was. The plot sounds SO good. And the plot is not at all the problem, I was actually very into the plot. But the writing is dry and repetitive, the characters are literally ALL insufferable, OP'd and wishy washy. It got ... minorly tolerable in the very last chapter, but this is the first book that has convinced me never to pick up the rest of the series.
I started reading this series in high school and reading it again did not disappoint! I can't wait to actually make it past the first book and figure out what happens next!
loved the first book on this series and i'm hungry for more, I need to read so much more of this tale.
it's fantastic the world Scott's paint and show us in this narration. I do want to see where this journey will get all of the characters, specially the twins, and i'm totally shipping Josh and Scathach right now.
For Dee I do think he is a victim of his own greed at some point but i like his character is pretty interesting and Flamel is so odd at times but that gives him charm.
I still have 4 book to go and discover where the path will end.

I loved this book so much more than I thought I would; I read it in less than a day! Although it was a little bit too young for me, I could still get right into it and really enjoy it. The plot line was quite predictable, but it was interesting learning more about alchemy and superstitions from the past.
There were plenty of characters to learn about, and there was definitely character development throughout the book.
I liked how Scott divided the twins up at the end - this will create an interesting narrative device for the series' future. Looking forward to reading more of these books, and thank you very much for sending one to me!

Put into my hands by a student, I thoroughly enjoyed the first book. The character development was good and it feels like you are being dropped into this world of magic along with the twin main characters having to decide which side along with them.
While there seemed to be a lot of unnecessary, almost verbatim, repetition of words in the book, I did enjoy the characters and story. I'm pretty happy with this series as it was a light fantasy that kept me intrigued enough to want to read the next book. I'm not sure where it's going yet, but I'm looking forward to getting there!
Loved this book! So hard to put down wanted to see what was going to happen. Looking forward to the rest of the series! I really loved that the author used people who actually lived a long time ago made the story that much more interesting!
