This was beautiful! The world felt like out of a fairytale, full of magic and everything enter wined with each other in magical ways. I wish it would’ve been explored more. Exploring the details of the worlds politics and different cultures more would have been awesome. You were given bits and pieces that made me hunger for more.
I love how the book explored misogyny and homophobia within this world. Nothing ground breaking, but within the realms of this world and characters glorious to explore nonetheless.
The characters were stunning. I loved them all for different reasons. Some I loved, some I wanted to be friends with and some I just wanted to strangle, but they were so interesting and gave you more perspective on the story and relationships. It took me a while to warm up to Rake and wasn’t so sure about getting into his perspective. But once I did I enjoyed myself reading through his eyes just as much as with Flora and Evelyn.
Flora and Evelyn were beautiful. Their love for each other made my heart flutter and ache, and I was rooting for them from beginning to end. Their romance was the best part of the book by far.

If I'd had this book when I was a teenager, if I had read about Florian and the Pirate Supreme...and that was only like 10 years ago.

There were actually a lot of things in this book that I dont usually like, but I let it slide here bc I was just enjoying the story as a whole.
There was instalove, so I didnt really understand the romance. It didnt really click for me, but the way their interactions were written were just really soft and sweet :) but yeah it was very much giving high school puppy love. Imo, at the end,
Flora/Florian should have had to move on from Evelyn's death instead of joining her as a mermaid. Family was supposed to be kinda important, so I just cant see why she has just obtained a father figure and reunited with her brother only to leave them to be with a girl.

The witch arc also felt really rushed despite it being the longest part of the book. Actually all the parts just felt really fast to me?
I was also confused by the epilogue. But, overall, a fun read.

This was a fun, quick read that kept me turning the pages. Despite the cartoonish cover art, it's definitely not a kid's book. I will put some content warnings below, but it doesn't dwell on the gory details, more states some and alludes to others. Some of the character's are morally gray, especially in the beginning, but some of it is sort of about finding your conscience and forgiving yourself but still taking responsibility. It's actually a lot about imperialism and class. Accurate messages about our world from this fictional world.

CWs: blood, injury, and graphic violence; murder; references to slave trade; allusions to rape and rapists; alcoholism; some descriptions of torture

This book opens with a very intense scene aboard a hostile pirate ship, and let me tell you, it does not let up from there for one second. If you're looking for a very queer story about pirates, and magic, and storytelling, this is absolutely the book for you!

What I love about this story is that it keeps turning on its head and surprising the reader in innovative ways. By the end, you've been introduced to all the titular entities—the mermaid, the witch, and the sea—and they're not at all what (or who) you expect. I have such a deep appreciation for stories that play with character and imagination to bring about these unforgettable adventures, and that's definitely what this book is at its core.

Probably what hit me the hardest in this book is how it plays with the idea of stories as magic. It explores how memories are stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, how we can use stories to both obfuscate the truth and reveal the truth, and how the truest stories we possess are a literal form of magic that can change the world around us. This is a story that gives power to emotion and truth, and shows in both literal and metaphorical ways how those things can change and effect our world. I can say with absolute certainty that some of the lines in this book are going to echo in my head forever, simply because they are true.

At the end of the day, this is a story about characters trying to rewrite their stories against impossible odds, in a world that is determined to confine them to a single narrative, when they are so much more than that. There's queerness, there's romance, there's adventure, there's magic, there's pirate battles—what else could you possibly want from one book?

I can honestly say I was hooked from the first page and ended up getting so much more out of this story that I ever expected. This is an unforgettable fantasy adventure that has to be read to be believed, and I'm already looking forward to the day I get to experience it all over again.
