This book felt like a contract fulfilment for the author, not a necessary part of the plot. The scholomance story should have finished with book two, and remained a nice little duology. This third book added NOTHING. Novik waffles and waffles and waffles and waffles about literally everything. We get it El, can destroy Maw-mouths! We don’t need to see three seperate instances of her doing it, just for her to find out OMG she doesn’t even need to kill a maw mouth because Orion goddamn ate it like a gummy bear. Liesel is the most POS character I think I have ever seen holy mother of god she has no purpose except as El’s Uber driver. She clearly wants something - this is even addressed in one of the many waffle pages. Yet what she wants is never addressed, or explained, so all she does is serve as a human sex toy and black cab.

Don’t read this book - all it does is ruin the others

I really loved this. It raised some interesting ethical questions about humanity’s intrinsic nature selfishness, and how we help combat it, with different characters taking different approaches. Ends vs means etc. I loved the conclusion to El’s arc too. And as an added bonus this series has the most wholesome sex scenes.

I didn't see many of the bombshells coming, but overall, I enjoyed it. I do hope there will be a follow-up in some years to check in with El and Orion, et al.
