3/5

Many of the reveals in this novel were fantastic, and this remains one of my favorite magic systems and worlds, however, I struggled through the first 60% of this because I wasn't into El and Orion's angsty situation. And while I'm not mad at the ending, it also wasn't everything I'd hoped it to be.

Orion and El should have been allowed to stay together for always at the end instead of him becoming a glorified security guard and being apart from her for most of the year, and I'm really irked about that, but romance has always been Novik's weak point and otherwise this book was spectacular and satisfying and rich and made me cry so much that my cat got really concerned.

EDIT: I can't stop thinking about this. Orion's ending is so bleak, like a punishment. The boy has never been free for a single moment of his life so in the end he gets... chained to the school as a forever guard? He doesn't get to go off and live and learn who he is or what he likes outside of being a manufactured killing machine? This goes beyond Novik not being good at romance novels and is just unnecessarily miserable.

Amazing close to the series. Continues the strengths of the previous books—the voice of the MC, the exploration of the world— and builds on them.  It’s like being strapped to the world’s most clever rollercoaster. Can’t wait to read more from this author!
