I know a lot of people really like this, but it just feels a little heavy-handed to me.

So I was really excited about reading another Neal Shusterman book, his writing tends to be unforgettable.
I wasn't disappointed at all....phew!
Loved this book, loved the characters, loved the story, loved it!!
Someone (I don't know who sorry) described Neal Shusterman as the Tim Burton of YA books, and that is a really good call.
If you have never read a Shusterman book before, firstly WHAT ?!?!?!
What he does in his books is a little like a college professer in class, he leaves you thinking "what would I do?"
Class......"If you could legally abort your child after the age of 13, just by signing a piece of paper that is legally binding, and that said child, now 15 years old pissed you off BIG TIME one night, would you sign it......what about in anger? would you"............DISCUSS........
^^^That above is what it is like reading Unwind, one of my all time favourite YA books, I haven't met anyone that read it and went mehh, and if you say "that" scene to them, they just nod and shudder, ..........do it, read it.
In Bruiser, we meet Brewster "Bruiser" Rawlins, he is the boy at school you avoid, who never smiles, who never talks, who never looks you in the eye.
We also meet Tennyson and Brontè, twins from a loving stable family.
And lastly we meet Cody, Brewsters little brother.
There is a reason for Brewster (brew for short) being so stand offish, he cannot get close to anyone, otherwise it could literally kill him.
If you had the chance to take someone's pain away would you do it? Where would this end? Bruises, cuts, broken bones?? And who would this stop at, just people you cared for? Just your family? .............DISCUSS. ....
Brontè starts to go out with Brewster, much to her brothers dismay, after all he was voted the person most likely to get the death penalty!
However, a friendship arises between them all and everything is fine, until one day Brontè cuts her hand quite badly...........and then it is gone, and Brewster shows up with a sliced hand!
With a F'd up life living with his abusive uncle, this book shows us all 4 lives as they intermingle with each other, as it is told in 4 POV's one of them being in verse.
Read this book, or something by Neal Shusterman, you will not be disappointed!

This book should be an advertisement of how selfish people can get when faced with a miracle. For the most part, I enjoyed this book, but I wasn't a big fan of how these characters were so ready to protect Brewster, but just ended up being just as selfish as his uncle, even if it was unintentional (for the most part) .
Bronte and her obsession with him getting lots of friends, when she knew what was up with him was probably the most frustrating. Her personality bugged me because at times I wondered if she treated him more like a pet project, or like a boyfriend.
I get that this book has a lot of layers and it does, and I enjoyed it for the most part, but some of the characters in this book really made it drag. Loved Brewster's perspective and how it was written. Verse is definitely the way to go with a character like his.
That's it, that's all.
Happy reading!

Although I predicted this would be 5 stars for me, and it was, this story was absolutely nothing like I expected. I thought it was going to be a fun light fantasy, but it was an intense relatable hard-hitting story.
I loved the different voices of each character and thought they made the story connect beautifully.

I was thinking about how to classify this book, and the closest I could come was magical realism, a bit like David Almond’s Clay. It’s subtle and freaky and fantastic. The three main characters could so easily have tipped into either unlikeability or sentimentality, but they did neither. [May 2011]
I think Bruiser was a really great book! I am really glad that Brewster has someone like Bronte with him! Despite his strange condition, I still believe he is sweet and strong willed! I guess PERSEVERANCE would be the word that best describes him! His free verse poems/story was very creative. The way he described the setting was superb. My other favorite character was Tennyson because he was funny and protective of his little twin sister!
"As your older brother, it is my sacred duty to save you from yourself."
This is the first book I read from Neal Shusterman's collection. I have to say, it was interesting!

I have no words for this book. Okay, I have some, but barely anything I can say will convey how incredible the story of Bruiser was. I mean… it was just… it was… amazing. Yeah, that’s not very convincing. But I don’t know what else to say. I had no idea what to expect going into this story, and the poignant story of family and love and pain that I got was just… not what I was expecting, at all. Okay, now I’m just repeating myself. Maybe by now you understand that this book made me pretty speechless? Well, I hope so ’cause that’s what I’m trying to say. This book was incredibly written, hauntingly beautiful, poignant, important and a must read for anyone that believes books should mean something and make them feel things that they wouldn’t have otherwise. I don’t think this is a story I’ll forget anytime soon. It was beautiful.
