Couldn't get into it at first. The structure is that of a found footage movie but in book form so there's a loooot of exposition in the first few chapters. Like a lot.
The characters were one dimensional upon first introduction. Here's the camera guy, Jake, let him tell about camera stuff. Here's the scientists, Claire, she's gonna drone on about the scientific method in ghost shows. Here's the eternal believer, Matt, let him tell you about his childhood ghost experience. The ex-cop, Kevin, about what it's like being an ex-cop turned paranormal investigator. Lastly, the actress single mother, Jessica or Rashida, and how hard it is to be away from her son while pursuing her acting career.
I wasn't into this book at all up to the halfway point. But everything slowly but surely unravelled. The scares which were popcorn horror flicks at first started to become creepier and foreboding. The characters started to shed their persona they had on for the camera and I'm suddenly consuming a delicious treat of a horror book.
Just like the events in this book, its almost unbelievable how my enjoyment of this book turned up a notch. I just had to let Craig DiLouie cook undisturbed and he didn't disappoint.
