Great book. A tragedy that occurred where I live and that keeps haunting us. All schools in the Denver Metro area were closed last week because of the threat of a Columbine- obsessed woman. Dave Cullen does so much with this story, and there was so much for me to learn about all of the players. It’s a very sad, tragic story, but also absolutely fascinating. Dave Cullen finds the hope, strength, and forgiveness where it exists too. Highly recommend this book.
I could have used a little more cohesiveness in the details. Some parts got repetitive in a way that bordered on laziness. The details of the coverup were some of the strongest portions.
Graphic: Gun violence, Mass/school shootings, Medical trauma
Moderate: Suicide

actually when I was in high school (2010-2014), the parents of Rachel Scott (the first death) and some other people came to represent their foundation and to present ✨️ RACHELS CHALLENGE ✨️ to a bunch of bored teenagers. I don't remember much other than they were saying that Rachel always knew she would die early and that she thought kindness would save the world. Essentially, the challenge was to BE NICE and prevent school shootings. I think they even made us physically sign a pledge.
Of course, since we're all teenagers, no one took this seriously. Any time somebody dissed their friend as a joke, someone would interject, "RACHEL'S CHALLENGE!!!!!"
Anyways, after reading this book, the challenge seems even more outrageous. Teens have such a strong BS detector, and we knew even then that something didn't add up. Yes, anti-bullying campaigns are good and necessary but like the politicians response to Parkland, it seems a bit victim blame-y. Like you kids brought this on yourself for being assholes!!!!
It seems like the Scotts took a page out of Misty Bernalls book and decided to capitalize off of their daughters death by framing it like a Christian martyr. I can't imagine how much money they take per event AND according to their website, they say they're the MOST effective program against school bullying?? What?? By what reasoning??
Anyways, this was all tangentially related but I hope anyone reading this becomes aware of this bonkers "challenge"

Heartbreaking by the very nature of the subject matter. But so interesting without a doubt (in a really backwards way).
I didn’t know much about the Columbine murders, but the level of detail in this was very insightful and the personal touch from the author’s own experience of being there as a reporter added to that.
