Columbine

I found this book to be underwhelming. Story was more about the people who were killed, which is fair, but I was looking to know more about the nitty gritty details of why these 2 kids did what they did.

Oof. Awful, devastating. Convincing Dylan Klebold apologia.

I’m not sure why i read this. It made my heart sink and it gave more details of the killers than i cares to know. They should write books on the survivors and stop glorifying killers

It is one thing to know that a massacre such as Columbine happened, but it is another thing entirely to know the intricacies leading up to, during, and after an event.

This was such an evocative , well researched, and impressively written book. Cullen really broke down each aspect of the Columbine massacre and analyzed its various parts in a way that left bias out and kept the facts front and center. That being said, I do have a couple issues that are entirely personal preference.

I felt like the ordering of the chapters was disruptive to the feelings the book was emitting. Throughout the book, the chapters would switch between pre-event and post-event. So for one chapter I’d be reading about motives and planning leading up to the massacre, the next chapter would be about a grief stricken family dealing with the aftershocks. For me personally, I wish it had remained chronological source feeling radar wasn’t going from one extreme to the other every chapter.

Overall, this book was poignant and impactful. And at times brought me to tears. I thought the examination of the different perspectives of those involved was critical to telling the full story in such a robust way. What is probably most heart wrenching about this book is to know that the Columbine massacre happened in 1999, and still nothing has been done to prevent this event from recurring over and over again.
