A fascinating read, although I know that sounds morbid and demented. My oldest son was 9 months old when the shooting took place, I was a young stay at home mom at the time and I watched the news coverage on TV while he played on the floor nearby. It was horrifying. Now that son is 17, just preparing to start his senior year and the horror is multiplied. I am flabbergasted by some of the parents' reactions, I relate well to others. Mrs. Sanders has my most heartfelt sympathies, to be floating in that sea of compassion and fear all alone. In all these years my opinion about the Harris' and Klebolds hasn't changed. I don't say opinion of, because I clearly don't know them. But I've always felt that they suffered the greatest losses of all. I would a million times rather lose my child than to know he was responsible for the blood and suffering of so many.

And the authorities, (meaning those in power in Jeffco) were completely disgusting.

I rarely finish non-fiction. I usually peter out just before the end, as most non-fiction books don't have a true ending, they kind of just run out of information and stop. I finished this. It was well-researched and well-paced--it jumped around a lot from subject to subject and in time, but that worked for my short attention span. The brief but frequent changes in tone took away from the writing a little bit, when he would slip into Dy

Not for the faint of heart. Incredibly thorough investigation of the Columbine High School massacre.

Good insightful book into what is still a terrible tragedy.
informative reflective sad

Cullen's book is such a well-researched and analyzed account of the Columbine shootings....well, it was actually a school bombing that didn't work. That fact alone made me realize that we are easily influenced by the media and since the media was given little information from officials, they took liberties with their conclusions. Cullen's writings about Eric and Dylan's demise was fascinating and infuriating.

Such an excellent read. Combines facts with engaging storytelling. Will have you questioning everything you thought you knew.

Obviously this was emotionally challenging to read. There is never any satisfaction regarding an event like this, even knowing the information can’t get you close to understanding.
The essays about the martyrdom myth, how it came to be, and the chain reaction of impacts on the surviving witnesses stood out to me. I felt like that whole thing has so many layers and the author had empathy and honesty for all involved with perpetuating that particular myth.
The timeline was so disjointed - I would have preferred something more chronological.
The author spent 10 years gathering information to create this book, which was so necessary. At the same time there were some details included that were so irrelevant I felt like they distracted from the issue at hand.
