So I actually listened to this book because I started to read it and couldn’t force my way into it. I was amazed at how much I didn’t know. This happened the day before my first deployment.

Excellent overview and somewhat of a dark slapstick tragedy in light of the misinformation and myths exposed - the overall lesson is that there IS no lesson... people will continue to ignore, deny and rationalize all the warning signs prior to an acting-out -- then will continue to do the same after the event to be able to deal with the consequences.

Not an uplifting or comforting message - but it is a true one, unfortunately.

An excellent read. The book is very well written, and I learned why Columbine happened.

This is a really silly comment, but -- this book is really sad & overwhelming! I found it interesting to get inside the shooters' heads, and learn more about their backgrounds, as well as what actually happened the day of the shooting, but about 3/4 of the way through the book, I felt I had experienced enough, and didn't need to go on.

Absolutely stunning book about a national tragedy. Columbine changed the country forever and Cullen does an amazing job separating fact from fiction with the case.

This is an extraordinarily clear-sighted and compassionate account of the events leading up to the Columbine High School shootings in 1999. Cullen has been covering the story from the day of the tragedy, and puts to rest many of the rumours and mistruths that surrounded the perpetrators, their motives and the events of 20 April. Most importantly, he plainly and convincingly answers the most difficult question of all—why? HIghly recommended.

This is a horrifying, but fascinating read about the Columbine massacre. Cullen is an exceptional writer. He documents his pages with facts drawn from the investigation and interviews, but the reading flows with ease. He is most of all objective, almost detached in his reporting by letting the tragedy and its impact tell the story. He does not glorify in any way the killers and their actions nor he grieve for the victims or moralize in anyway. He gives a sufficient history of psychopathy and makes it understandable. Reading the diary and video excerpts of the killers, it is horrifying-terrifying to think that anyone could ever think as they did. The ultimate tragedy is in the loss of lives, and the lasting impact on the victims, their families, the killers' families, and the community.
dark emotional informative reflective sad slow-paced

This was a really difficult listen but the narrator and author did a wonderful job with the material. The negligence of JeffCo prior to the event with the killers’ diversion programs and the bungling of the investigation afterward is really astonishing. Great read and highly recommended.

A masterpiece of modern non-fiction, and while the horror and the details of the day come through, the true accomplishment of the book is its examination of the power of narrative to shape our collective memory.
