Corran Horn is an excellent character. Mirax is awesome (but, too little seen). Love Mara Jade snippets. Gotta love a reread of a classic EU novel.
>>> "Mirax noted, that carrying a child for a full nine months meant she would already have 3.11 years of fourth-hour weeks of child care logged and that I would owe her. "
>>> "That is the purpose of life, is it not? To create life is the greatest act a loving creature can commit." the solemnity and truth in his words hit me hard.
>>> "Corran: "It all comes down to the nature of evil doesn't it? Evil is selfishness, while good is selfless. If intake an action that benefits me, only me, and hurts others, I am evil. If I do what must be done to prevent harm to others, if I become a buffer between them and evil, then My actions will be good."
Elegos: "Your intentions will be good. Without consideration and forethought, however, your actions could still be evil. That is the problem of course, evil is always easy and resisting it is never so. Evil is relentless; and anyone, if they tire, if they are not vigilant, can fall prey to it. "
Corran: "and there are situations where opposing evil may result in harm coming to the innocent."
Elegos: "it does happen, yes. Life is not without pain, but life concerns itself with how we handle that pain, or joy, or confusion, or triumph. Life is more than time passing before death, it is the sum and total of all we make of it. Decisions may not be easy, but many is the time when not making a decision, not taking an action is worse than a poor decision. Evil flourishes when it is not opposed, and those who are able to oppose it must to protect those who cannot protect themselves."

I Really loved this one. Stackpole is probably one of my top Star Wars writers. Some say that this book is quite slow, which I wouldn't say that it is super fast or anything, but the world building and character development is great. Corran is a great character and have enjoyed him in all the other books, too. The first part of this book does intertwine with Kevin Anderson's "Jedi Academy" trilogy, so it helps to have read that. I personally really enjoy this and it adds more dimension to the EU books overall.
The story tells of Corran Horn, of Rogue Squadron, attempting to save his wife from the clutches of some pirates and an ex-imperial warlord. His journey takes him to Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy where he learns to better control and use his Jedi abilities. He also learns a lot about his past and his Jedi grandfather.
All in all it's a great story and worth reading, especially if you enjoyed Stackpole's Rogue Squadron series.

A great book. The main character was fairly powerful, and his was the only point-of-view. That is what I like.

My main issue with this book is that it is too long. There are two complete story arcs in this novel, each independent of the other and this leads to a book that was a bit tedious to get through. By the time I realized that the first arc had really no impact story-wise I had invested enough time into reading that I decided to finish this book, but it was laborious. I'd like to think that there could have been an opportunity to link the first arc to the second in a way that would pay off, but no such pay off came.
One of the best of all Star Wars fiction. A truely original story told in the familiar universe which will be a book that no fan will be able to put down.

Its a hard review, because while the story is good. It is mostly because its ripped from the Jedi academy trilogy in parts. but Corran is still a badass character and it is still a fun story. so 4 stars?
