Ow my heart! This is such a sweet story about grief and carrying on a loved one's legacy. If you're looking for picture books that help little ones understand/cope with death, this is a great book to try.

Sometimes, the only way to deal with the absence of a loved one is to lock things away - be they memories or physical objects.

The boy copes with the death of his grandfather, Dadaji, by locking everything away. The paintings. The paint. The paintbrush. And his joy and creativity.

A small child reminds him of their shared past, and helps him rediscover his Dadaji and his memories and joy.

A boy learns from his grandfather, to paint while he is alive, to remember after he has gone.

Unfortunately, loss of loved ones, and its accompanying grief, is a part of life. Books can provide solace for those of any age. But finding the ones that may help a young child can be particularly challenging. In Dadaji’s Paintbrush, Rashmi Sirdeshpande embodies bits of her grandfather and father to share how our loved ones remain a part of us through the gifts, both tangible and intangible, they have given us. The pencil & pastel art is soothing and serene bringing an overall sense of peace and comfort to this touching story.
