The Archive of Magic is a behind-the-scenes look at the making of The Crimes of Grindelwald, the second movie in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

I did buy the first one two years ago because I’m a sucker for finding out more about prop-making, the actors, how the sets were designed, what the design concepts for the costumes looked like vs how it looked in the movie in the end, the CGI used and, of-course, wanted to know more about the beasts as well. I didn‘t know there would be one for the second movie as well, but really should have known.

Once again, we get a book with a magnetic clasp and photographs of high quality (which still doesn‘t excuse the exorbitant price).

Sadly, I have to confess that I didn‘t like the movie. The story, character developments and several other major elements were just wrong. Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that the movies are of very high quality and the crew is a highly-trained group that makes the wizarding world come to life like few other sceneries on screen. Therefore, I couldn‘t resist and read this book (no, I didn‘t buy it).

As with the first book, this is a bit like a smashbook. Thus, in addition to the photographs from the sets and movie scenes, we also get little identity cards, Credence‘s adoption certificate, newspapers, maps and posters that can be taken out or which fold out so it is quite the nice reading experience.

As in the first book, we have chapters about the main characters (some known from the first, some new), the different settings, the magical objects (yes, wands as well), and creatures.
I think it‘s best to show you:

So yes, it is beautiful but considering that I didn‘t love the movie (story-wise) and how expensive this is, I‘m not sad to not have bought it. I want the magic, I want to be spellbound - neither of which happened, but at least this was interesting and done with a lot of really cool attention to detail.

I usually love books like this, the behind the scenes of how movies like this get made. Case in point, I love the 6 book series, two for each movie, dedicated to the Hobbit trilogy even if Jackson royally screwed up the films.
This one however? A bunch of superficial fluff that does not really actually describe the movie making or if it does, only brief glimpses of it.
I do not recommend.

I've received this one as a Christmas present from my amazing boyfriend and, even though I didn't like the movie AT ALL, this book is so well done!
I work in the TV and movie industry, so it's always interesting to me to read how a particular movie or scene were made and how all the different departments worked in order to achieve the final result.
Even my little sister, who's not an HP fan, was very interested in this book and wanted me asked me if she could borrow it!
