Wes you sweet baby angel.

This story was heartbreaking and wonderful and happy and sad and I loved it.

Melanie Harlow continues to deliver emotional and complex stories that make you think and make you feel. This one is no different.

Hannah is a young waitress who engages in conversation with the shy student that studies at her diner regularly. One day, his twin comes in and well...the rest is history. He sweeps her off her feet, they have a child, then, he abruptly dies. After the death of her husband, his twin returns to town and while she is drawn to his obviously similarities to her departed husband, she beings to realize the differences and unique qualities of this man. You find that his selflessness led to her happiness, but he's not letting her go this time.

When I first read the blurb, I thought "Uh-oh. This isn't right" -- a woman with her dead husband's twin? What? How is she going to pull this one off. Honestly, I don't know how she does it - but Melanie makes this work as a beautiful story about second changes, and fighting for your happiness against all odds.

Goodness Melanie sure knows how to pull on my heart strings. I loved this story of 2nd chance love. I also love the idea that you love no matter the consequences and no matter what others thinks.

We should all aspire to have that kind of love.

I fell in love with this story! It has a small, gossipy town, a widowed woman with a five year-old little girl, a nagging mother-in-law, good friends, and a brother-in-law who is the twin of the dead husband. The book starts with: “I THOUGHT HE WAS A GHOST”. How can you not get enthralled with such an enticing beginning?

Hannah lost her husband Drew a year and a half ago. It has been hard, she didn’t plan to have to raise her daughter alone, they were supposed to raise her for the next eighteen years and visit Europe and grow old together. She misses her husband but what she misses most is the concept of a family, a man to help her shoulder the responsibilities of raising a child and maintaining a home. She’s still a little frail, struggling to live and trying hard to be the best mother she can be to little Abby.

Wes is Drew’s twin. He actually met Hannah first ten years ago, but he was too shy to make an approach, even though he was into her. Some weeks later, Drew came into the coffee shop where Hannah worked. Drew was the outgoing one of the twins, he was loud and confident and cocky and won Hannah all over. After the wedding, Wes left to work with Doctors Without Borders and had just recently arrived, to take over their father’s medical office.

Now that Wes is back in town, Hannah is plotting how to avoid him, because the sight of him upsets her and she fears it will confuse her daughter to see a man who looks just like her father. However, family obligations force her to see Wes, who wants to have a relation with his niece. Little by little, Wes wins Hannah over, because he listens to her, he understands her, and moreover he understands her anger and her guilt over Drew.

Little Abby is taken with her uncle and enjoying spending time with him. She’s sometimes trying to replace her dead daddy with her uncle who looks just like her daddy, and she yearns to have a family again. This makes Hannah feels inadequate, like she’s failing as a mother and to make Abby feel safe. The MIL is a judgmental, opinionated and jealous old  haridan who is always subtly nipping at Hannah’s self-confidence and is a huge obstacle for Wes and Hannah. Situations arise, the MIL does her scheming, Hannah’s friends give her support. The biggest obstacle for them is Hannah’s mind, because she doesn’t believe in fate anymore.

I loved this story; it was so well-written, great pacing, great character building. I grew a little impatient with Hannah because she doubted so much, but I understood that she feared the reactions of Wes’ parents and the town gossips. She also felt like she was being disloyal to Drew’s memory. There were heartfelt emotions, family opposition, the angst, the sense of the “forbidden" relation of a man and his brother's widow, and the little girl who wanted a family, all that made this such a great story to read. I actually read this book in one day, it was so riveting.

Emotional book that had some moments that would break your heart and at times you'll be upset.

When I read the blurb I wondered how these two would get together. Wes and Hannah had history but that's something that I won't say how because it takes away from the building of their relationship.

Hannah was a widow and single mom who was living for her 5 year old daughter Abby. She wasn't moving on with her life. She had no desire for anything. Until Wes returned. Wes who is the identical twin brother of her deceased husband which had her thinking that he will confuse her daughter and wanted him to stay away.

Wes returned after his identical twin brother Drew passed away unexpectedly. He tries to build a relationship with Hannah and his niece Abby but there is clearly more. He fought against it but he just couldn't help falling in love with Hannah. Wes biggest obstacle is his mom that is so meddling I wanted to strangle her.

Wes and Hannah finally gave in and started a relationship which at first she was doubtful about because they live in a small town and all they do is gossip but Wes didn't care. Hannah let go a little bit about the gossip but then things happen. And again I wanted to strangle Wes mom especially after finding out the trigger to Hannah's meltdown was someone from the past. I've never disliked a mother-in-law so much in a book like Lenore.

Wes and Hannah had good support system in the Valentini brothers, Jack 😍, and their wives. It was nice to read about Margot and how she was adapting.

This is a great read with a 5 year old that asks lots of questions but is such a sweetheart. For a bit I wish Hannah was tougher on her mother-in-law just like Wes at times. She was very controlling and manipulative. But I'm happy these two got their HEA after overcoming that bump in the road.

It was a fun read, but wasn’t one of my favorites.

This was a fantastic book that I couldn’t put down. I don’t want to give too much away. I’ll just say that I loved Wes and was happy that he finally got his HEA in the best way possible.

I loved this book.

I also recommend AFTER WE FALL.

3rd reading:
Heartbreaking and tenderly romantic, this is one of my favorite books of all time.

Absolutely stunning. The words, the characters, the story, all of it captivated me and made me swoon
I always love Melanie's work, but I think this was definitely one of my favorites. The emotions had me all over the place and the characters made me fall hard. It was beautifully heartbreaking.

I fell in love with this story and I cannot wait to see what Melanie will bring us next.
