Tracy K. Smith is... just... I don't have the words damnit. Her poems are lyrical, sensual, immediate and so, so very powerful. The drag you into other bodies and other worlds. They twist beautifully. They have duende.

This took a while for me to get into, but there are one or two I quite liked.

The glory of Tracy K. Smith is she does the every day impossible. She takes what is heavy and dense, difficult and unwieldy, and makes it buoyant, never sacrificing art for brevity, nor honesty for dramatic flair. The glory of Tracy K. Smith is that she leads us to somewhere new and alive, somewhere totally recognizable yet different and let's us decide what to do with it.

DUENDE envelopes you in the air of all that is foreign. Then she writes of characters from worlds we recognize: the elder, the lover, the unborn baby or babies we speak to, the transcendent musician who speaks to and transports us. She connects everyone with the Fates' great thread, that thread of life. And we are more alive for it.

Tracy K. Smith is the rarest of talents, a true architect: a poet.

"There is always a road,
The sea, dark hair, dolor.

Always a question
Bigger than itself—

They say you’re leaving Monday
Why can’t you leave on Tuesday? "
