While I loved the progression of Malcom and Seong-Jae I can't rate it on that alone which of course would make this five stars but I should take into account the other aspects of the story and that has me landing on a 4 star

Crime procedural series tend to get boring over time even with an overarching plot. BUT THIS ISN'T ONE OF THEM!!!
I'm so hooked onto these and I love how each book just peels away to reveal more pieces of a bigger picture that leave you wanting more and more. And I mean that about the plot, the character's themselves and their relationships with each other, just everything basically.

CWs for cults, gaslighting and emotional manipulation, on-page death, drowning, violence.

This series just gets better and better. After several books' worth of yearning and pining, Mal and Seong-Jae are now exploring their feelings for each other and I. am. ASCENDING. Honestly, this is it. This is the ship I would take a bullet for.

❝ I would like to remind you that the more you mention your ex-wife, the more frequently I threaten to murder you. ❞

the domesticity, the intimacy, the communication. this one just keeps on giving. it's the good moments before the end of the season. the banter is particularly delicious in this episode.

(as I post about the later books in this series, I will try to be vague, but if you haven't read these books and are planning to, you might want to skip this post from here.)

in this episode :

➸ Seong-Jae arguing that he does not blush (he does)
➸ Mal saying he will hunt down Seong-Jae's exes (oh the irony x 2)
➸ Anjulie knowing at a glance things she didn't want to know.
➸ Sade and Mal making up (the little spider being the only person alive who can get away with calling him Mal-Mal)

❝ I can't explain it easily, or in a few words. But just because we don't know how to explain gravity doesn't mean it doesn't exist for a reason. ❞
❝ So this is gravity ? ❞
❝ Do you feel it ? ❞
❝ ...perhaps I do ❞
(*cue gravity by sara bareilles*)

This series is not perfect there's a few things that I don't always like but one thing for sure is that Seong Jae and Malcom will probably one of my favourite couple ever.
It took me a while to realise why exactly I love them so much. I love their dynamic, the tension between the two of them, the slow burn (even though technically there isn't that much time between book 1 and 7 but it doesn't feel insta love at all) and how complicated they are individually and together. But more importantly, I think it has to do with how much I can relate to Seong Jae with how he has difficulties interracting with people and dealing with his emotions. And I also need to find myself a Malcolm 😅

The issues brought up in most cases are extremely important but I think some elements can be a little too black and white sometimes. For some of them I guess it can be because of cultural differences. I don't live in the US and I've never been there either so it can be harder to relate. I don't think it is intentional from the author and might just be me having this feeling.

I had my doubt for a few books now about who Silas was and now we pretty much have an explicit confirmation so I can't wait to see how things will go from now on. I feel like it's about to get really messy and I'm scared for them 🙈

It's disgustingly good
