Why I waited between the last book and this one, I have no idea. I started this one, wondering if I had over-hyped the series in my mind, only quickly devour it-- all while highlighting more sections than I have practically any other book.
I've gotta say that the progression of the romance between the main characters has been beautifully done and their own character growth and expression makes this series amazing. Practically a favorite... maybe... it is getting close. Anyhow, this is couple is one of my favorite, featuring a healthy relationship. Asking about one another, checking boundaries, open communication (...ish? since there are still dark secrets, but they are actively working on it), caring for one another. I love them and I love all their bickering. I laughed, I smiled, possibly even giggled over this couple.
But, this book isn't just about how cute Mal and Yoon are. WHat?!!? Yes, I know there are other awesome aspects here.
We can't forget about the crime they have to solve which, while not exactly a mystery, does border on thriller/horror because of how creepy these cases can be. Seriously, the writing is fantastic, truly evoking emotion from me-- including the chill up the spine.
There is also the overarching mystery. What happened with Silas and Yoon? When will it all come to a head?! The intensity is slowly building and it is killing me (in a good way).
I'll stop gushing now. Although, this is totally evidence on why I should write reviews promptly after finishing a book instead of waiting, oh... a month. *sigh* I'm trying.
Anyhow, if you have yet to pick up this series and you like creepy mysteries, cute romances I'm recommending this one to you!

He felt as though he ripped out a piece of his heart, to do so. Ripped out a piece of his heart and gave it to Seong-Jae to have, to hold, to keep. A piece that would belong to him forever, and would never fit inside Malcolm the same way again.
What a great (and super exciting) episode! It seems like more is happening on the sidelines with each and every book, and this one was no different.
Let’s just get into it by saying that Malcolm and Seong-Jae are absolutely adorable and they deserve the world. I’m super nervous about Sila and whatever he wants from Yoon because it’s obvious his relevancy to the plot is only increasing.
Also, it seems like Sila/Lucas is trying to establish himself into the lives of those around Yoon which is super creepy. I mean, we now know he has met both Malcolm and Gabi without Yoon being aware… I’m actually
There was something…off about him. Something that made the skin on the back of her neck prickle, and it wasn’t his odd-colored eyes. She couldn’t explain it, but it was the sort of thing that made women glance up on a dark street corner to realize the man across the street was watching them intently, though he hadn’t made a sound. The sort of thing that warned women to avoid this one in the bar, no matter how handsome or charming he might be; something that said do not touch.
Now let’s talk about the actual case in this episode! It wasn’t the most complex because more focus was put on the “side” plot, but it was still an interesting one. And cult(ish) murders are always lots of fun! (And by that I mean creepy and disturbing in all the best ways.)
“Well,” the boy chirped. “There is room in God’s heart for even the fallen. I’ll pray for you.” Malcolm eyed him. “You realize we can hear sarcasm.”

So I flew through this one. I definitely can feel that we're building up to something major and I just can't wait. The theme of this case -- oof. It hits hard when you're also someone who is deconstructing having been part of certain groups through your family.
All in all, I'm absolutely loving everything about this series. On to the next!
4.5/5
The review contains spoilers!
This series keeps getting better and better with every book, and my love for Seong-Jae and Malcolm just keeps growing and growing. Like seriously, this two idiots might kill me someday with how cute and affectionate they are.
Seong-Jae still keeps secrets from Malcolm that Malcolm knows he had, and I hope Silas won’t mess anything up between them. I’m pretty scared of this guy, he is a psycho and he works in Gabi’s new workplace? I know it will fuck up some things in the future.
Some of my favorite scenes (as always):
Seong-Jae sings? And it’s a Lady Gaga song? God he is the cutest.
The bickering is a perfection, as always.
Malcolm is going to be the best boyfriend, I know that.
This series is pretty long and they are already in a relationship, even though it’s only a beginning and they still don’t know everything about each other, but I’m pretty anxious because it’s only a 7 book from 28 in the series (at least for now). I hope nothing will happen in the next books for them. They deserve everything and more.

Some of my favorite scenes (as always):
“It is Lady Gaga,” Seong-Jae huffed in offended tones, and Malcolm had to bite his tongue to keep from bursting out laughing and possibly getting smacked for it.
“You are so, so gay.”
“Yes, I am.” Seong-Jae scowled at him. “Is that a problem?”
“Not at all,” Malcolm said—then leaned up to brush his lips to Seong-Jae’s."
Seong-Jae sings? And it’s a Lady Gaga song? God he is the cutest.
“…and you’re blushing,” he finished. “You’re blushing.” Narrowed eyes flung him a deadly look.
“Malcolm?”
“Yeah?”
“Shut up."
“Are you sinners, detectives?”
“Repeatedly and with each other,” Malcolm retorted. “Malcolm,” Seong-Jae hissed. Malcolm would apologize later."
The bickering is a perfection, as always.
“I’ll be good,” Malcolm promised. “I just really, really want to kiss you.”
“Why?”
“Because.” Malcolm grinned. “I’m high on the fact that I can.” Seong-Jae looked roughly two seconds away from biting him."
“Someone’s going to start shit with you sooner or later, Seong-Jae. I had your back as your partner…but I want everyone to know just how bad I will fuck them up if they touch my boyfriend.”
Malcolm is going to be the best boyfriend, I know that.

Very much here for Malcolm and Seong-Jae falling in love, and for whatever is happening with Gabby and the Captain! The tenderness all around is so so good!
Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5: Better than great, an undeniably enjoyable read, but not quite life-changing. Doesn’t feel like it’s glaringly missing anything, but there is no je ne sais quoi that would make it hauntingly good.
