An inside look at how Padme picked and formed her handmaids/body guards right before the events of The Phantom Menace. Definitely a YA novel but good nonetheless.

really liked this for more of padme, and an exploration of the relationship she had with her handmaidens, particularly sabe. i reaaaallly appreciate how the authors expands on certain things that didn’t totally make sense in the phantom menace movie, however you really can’t read this successfully without some knowledge of the phantom menace plot before hand. even though it runs prior and consecutive to the plot of tpm, i’d really recommend watching the movie or reading the book first - which makes sense bc this is about padme and her rise as queen and not a complete rehash of tpm.

also loved that little obi wan pov - made me very happy. and after qui gon died i was surprised to see that i wanted more of the relationship between qui gon and padme. i think it was an appropriate goodbye for him but it could have been nice to elaborate on that.

Man, man, man... I really wanted to like this one!

I want to preface this by saying that I think there is an enjoyable book in here for a different audience. Similarly to how I felt about Padawan with Obi-Wan, this read more like a middle-grade novel than a young adult one to me. I think that in that perspective, it could be a very fun read for younger readers.

That being said, man this book has some problems. This is probably a little hyperbolic but I don't know that I felt like the author cared about these characters. Everything felt so sterile and robotic, like flowing through the motions of the story. There's an interesting one buried in here, but unfortunately it doesn't come together as a whole.

This was fun! Loved having her POV of what happens behind the scenes for episode 1 of the movies (for me). Cant wait to listen to the next one.

I’ve never been a huge Padme fan so it comes as no surprise to me that I didn’t love this one. It was just ok. A bit boring to be honest.
