A fun read for Star Wars fans. It gives a new story perspective and insight into the life of Queen Amidala. Short and sweet this book is packed with plotting, rebellion and adventure. What else would you expect from the Star Wars saga.

Padme Amidala could step on me and I'd thank her.

My major critique point is that I wish this had been longer and gone more in depth with each of the handmaidens. They are such interesting characters, I wish I could have gotten to know them even better!

I think there was potential to make the reader more invested in the girls and their different personalities that was not fully realized, but would have intensfied the suspense of the events immensely.
Towards the end of the book, there were more and more short chapters, some of them just being a few lines about a story element from The Phantom Menace. Someone who hasn't seen the movie might struggle to follow - but then again why probably would not pick up this book. :D

Overall I had the impression that we were just scratching on the surface of what could be an amazing story from the viewpoint of characters that get little stagetime in the movie, but, as it turns out, have quite the impact in its events. While I did enjoy this read, it left me wishing for more...

I have not yet read Queen's Shadow, maybe that will fill in some of the blanks.

I think I've said before that Padme is one of my all time favorite characters in Star Wars. I appreciated that this book gave us a chance to see her in those early days as Queen, and gave more depth to her handmaidens. Aside from Sabe, none of them get to shine in the OG movie, and here they each have personalities and lives and a part to play, and it was a wonderful thing to see and learn about.

Seriously just inject all the Padme and handmaiden content DIRECTLY INTO MY VEINS. I loved Queen’s Shadow, but it’s possible I loved this book even more?? Getting to know each handmaiden, how she was selected, and what her individual role was on the team was fascinating. This is the era of Star Wars that I’m the most interested in because Padme was NOT done justice in the films. My kingdom for more of these books and a Padme show!

This book was an easy read but I was captivated by the plot and the relationships between the handmaidens. It provided an incredible backstory to notable moments of the Phantom Menace without attempting to re-write them.

Reading about the introduction of Amidala and her handmaidens was really fascinating. Also, how this story intertwined with the Phantom Menace was really enjoyable! It filled the gaps of the movie story line really well, and gave more insight as to the full story of what all took place during that time. I also enjoyed getting a better understanding of the remarkable skills, and overall individuality of each of the handmaidens!
