not my favorite thus far, but a good companion piece to the phantom menace. i enjoyed getting to know each of padmé’s original handmaidens, how they were chosen, what they brought to the group, and watching them learn to function together as friends and as aides. it was also nice to see how brilliant padmé is from the start of her transition as a young queen with the added layer of coming of age troubles.

however, this installment felt really choppy and read like an outline disney/lucasfilm press gave to the author. there wasn’t as much expansion as i hoped nor were the jumps between scenes seamless. in other words, it felt detached (padmé took the backseat, i fear) sans the introductory sections including the prologue and epilogues, which were wonderfully written and circular

Sooooo sweet. I loved learning about how the handmaidens were selected and trained. The innocence and lighthearted energy in the beginning of their story was really refreshing to read.

Kinda surprised how much I liked this side being told. Short and interesting additions to my knowledge of the Phantom Menace. Definitely a book more for tween girls. The random additions of character cameos were weird and not easy to understand if you haven’t seen the movie so definitely not a standalone prequel. I do like the showing of Padmé having tons of assistance since she was a super young Queen. Love any gayness in Star Wars too

I love a Star Wars book that makes the movies better, and this adds so much more depth and richness to the characters and plot lines of The Phantom Menace. This was a delightful book. Though readers should really watch episode I immediately before reading this. Pacing was great until it flew through the movie content. It may have been nice to slow that down and see the movie through a different point of view without rushing things.

The prequel to Queen’s Shadow - with the sequel Queen’s Hope due out next month - following Padme’s election to the Naboo throne and the coming together of her handmaidens.

It was great seeing how the handmaidens came to be selected and the formation of their group and Padme coming to her own, especially as we move into the timeline overlapping directly with The Phantom Menace.

Which leads to my one complaint: the exclusion of Padme’s thoughts and insight into the reveal of Darth Maul, who, while allocated a few POV portions, is not really discussed by Padme and her core cast of characters. But then again, I’m bias to one of my favorite Star Wars characters.
