first half actually had me hooked a bit. it kinda creeped me out and unexpectedly didn’t shy away from gore. but the second half turned into a slop and i could not gaf abt the romance. I cared more for the other victims and their backstories more than the main cast lets be real

I really enjoyed this.

The pace kept me on the edge. This is very much a slasher YA. The plot took a turn about halfway which I had not expected.

Makani has moved in with her grandmother in small town Nebraska where she has found a couple of friends and tries to keep her head town. Soon kids in her school are being found dead and she is convinced that that the killer is after her.

Her and her friends are determined to figure out who the killer is and to survive.

A classic teen horror novel, familiar troupes are elevated by themes of regret, gossip, presumptions, collective loss, and self-acceptance in spite of regret. Not to mention that it focuses on the interior lives of the victims instead of the villain.

I  am a fucking sucker for a slasher and this one was excellent, super fun with interesting characters. The addition of timeline and POV changes spiced things up. I will admit that I did spend a lot of time comparing it to what I could remember from the movie. Overall got through it without the differences bothering me or feeling "spoilered" by having seen the movie first.
