first half actually had me hooked a bit. it kinda creeped me out and unexpectedly didn’t shy away from gore. but the second half turned into a slop and i could not gaf abt the romance. I cared more for the other victims and their backstories more than the main cast lets be real

I am so mad at myself for finishing this book. This had every reason to be a DNF, but I convinced myself that there was a huge twist coming and it never did. 

The killer is revealed a little more than halfway in. I should’ve stopped there. But it was so early?! Surely it can’t be that simple? Alas, surely it can. And SO BORING and lackadaisical in the reveal too. For what? Oh, and the mysterious and dark and super top secret backstory of our main character that they hint towards the whole time? Huge let down, entirely irrelevant, and the actual core of the problem with that backstory is never addressed, at all, by any character even in the present. On top of that, all of the characters are unlikable (not in a good / on purpose way) or are completely random (as in, I don’t care about them or know anything about them) so the whole time you’re either like “ugh” or “who? Am I supposed to care?”

I feel so swindled. 1 star for the body horror and sorta graphic murdering, moderately impressive for a YA thriller.

I love when teens sleuth. The ending was too quick unfortunately. Much to be explored.

I thought the killer's motivation was misogyny. After Rodrigo explained he wasn't a misogynist any more, I figured that was where the plot was going. But the killer's thing being he didn't want people to leave town is easier to sympathize with. Not valid, just kind of understandable.

In the beginning of the book, It felt like just a romance book because it was mostly about the romance between the two main characters but once there was more action in the book, I started to appreciate the romance because they are very cute together. The ending of the book did feel a bit rushed though because everything was happening at once and there were so many things happening super quickly.  Some arts got confusing for me even after rereading a specific part but I still though the book was well written and I really did feel for the characters when something bad happened & I honestly loved all the characters and how they acted in certain situations. Chris was very protective over Ollie but it was so adorable 💗 I wish the reveal of who the killer was, was told more to the end but It was a strong 4 star book. It also made me emotional at times & the killings were pretty gruesome in my opinion. We also got a good back story into the first few students who were murdered but as more students were murdered, the less we even knew about them which made me care less. 

Also, the fact that Rodrigo and Alex both secretly liked each other but never knew absolutely broke my heart in pieces, idk its just so sad😭

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's tense, it's challenging, and I ended up really liking the characters. Stephanie Perkins has a knack for making characters feel multi-dimensional in a short time, which is invaluable for the slasher genre. It makes the escapes feel earned, and the deaths feel like a true loss. I was surprised to learn that this was published before The Woods Are Always Watching, since I feel like this one avoids the pitfalls that bothered me in The Woods.

I hope we get to see more horror from Perkins in the future.

I enjoyed this book! I feel like the killer was revealed too early in the book though, and it took some of the suspense away. It didn’t slow down though, which was nice!

There’s a pretty brutal hazing seen in chapter 19. It’s bad. The girls are forced to drink alcohol, they’re called names, they have food thrown at them and smeared in their faces, Makani is forced to eat dog food and she’s sick because of it. The girls are verbally abused and tabasco is poured in their eyes.

drowning is mentioned twice. Once in chapter twenty and then again in chapter 22. It chapter twenty Makani talks about her ex best friend nearly drowning after running into the ocean when she was drunk. In ch 22 Ollie tells Makani how he planned to drown himself in a suicide attempt.

This book was gruesome and entertaining, it had all the elements of a good slasher but the killer reveal didn’t have a good twist, it fell a bit flat for me. The motivation wasn’t as built up as I would have liked either as it’s just kind of explained with a line at the end and not much more? The main characters past was also set up as a huge plot point but didn’t seem to have high-stakes or really help with the killer plot, which is an interesting twist, but the motivation really just needed more time. 
Good characters, written to captivate and overall very fun, but I wanted more explanation around it all.
