I always find it hard to review books I don’t particularly enjoy. This was a thriller romance novel set in a small town, where teenagers are brutally murdered. I didn’t like that you found out who the killer was quite early on in the book, that was way too soon for me. I guess it was more about the chase. I definitely felt that it was dragging on and going round in circles. It almost felt like two separate books. It was kind of a romance, but then the violence was very sudden and over the top, in my opinion. The ending was very disappointing and I feel like there should’ve been some kind of plot twist.

Spoiler Alert: I don't hate this book.

It's definitely not as good as her previous trilogy/set, but it isn't BAD, either. It's especially good if you like Scream, or old slasher horror films, because that's pretty much the trope and genre this novel falls into. Overall, I really enjoyed, though I feel both Makani's secret and the killer's motivation was weak. However, I'm always craving something new and twisted from horror, so I can't fault Stephanie for staying in the boundaries of the genre. I think I'm really glad I read a library copy before I bought the book, but I'm just glad for another book from Stephanie and a quick, page-turning read in the midst of upcoming finals and papers!

I've never read Stephanie Perkins before, but after hearing some pretty split reviews, I was super impressed with this book. It has the tense horror vibe your looking for, explores characters backgrounds well enough that you feel for them, has some good reveals that you didn't see coming (and some you might have so you still have those victories!) I can't get over how much this does feel like a horror film to be, fix into a YA book. I was quite impressed with that overall. I did also enjoy discussions from our main character on being biracial, I found that to be very apt and correct. I enjoyed the grandma, and the love interest, and that Stephanie Perkins included sex and discussions of contraception in the book as well. It overall did feel very well-rounded. I will say that one of the characters in trans and the deadname is used. Perkins has addressed this and says it will be fixed; however, that did show up in my edition of the book (meaning it wasn't revised in the US first edition printing), so hopefully this will be revised in a new printing.

Trigger warnings for: gore, blood, violence, excessive underage drinking, hazing, mentions of suicide, cyber bullying
Rep for: biracial MC, trans MC (pls. note this character's deadname is used in the text)

2 stars, it was entertaining for the first 3/4 then just became suuuper repulsive, a bit of a lag, and predictable. I was a bit unimpressed. Also I didn’t understand the deep info on the romance in this bc although yes character development is a thing, why was it like a fling?? Idk I feel like it would have been better if it was based on a foundation of friendship… it was fine enough to listen to, but it would have been a DNF if I physically read it://
