This was a good book. It's sad what happened to Pat and Donovan. Donovan was a boy who grew up not so healthy mentally. His grandmother didn't aid in his mental stability or his view point in women. Campbell was a young girl who witnessed a lot of heartache. This book will take you through the lives of both these characters and their parents. Sometimes the actions of our parents seep into our lives when we get to adulthood. The ending made me mad. Bernice L MCFadden did a good job with this book. I wanted to reach into the book and slap Grammy. Lol.

Donovan pissed me off. Let me start there. The emotion and childhood trauma could be felt all through this read, so I understood his troubles. I just wanted him to be his own man, with his own mind. His grandmother...misery loves company.

Campbell was a more likable character than Donovan. She has her own childhood drama and trauma, is still living with her mother and is a single mother. She tried too hard to love Donovan and his efforts seemed halfhearted.

The emotions this story stirred, I was not expecting but the storyline was good and very relatable.

I love this book, but I swear to God it is not the book to read if you have unresolved feelings about an ex. When I read it a few years ago, I wasn't really affected by it. I listened to it this time around & I was ready to kick stuffed animals before it was all over.

This book made my heart hurt. Also maybe some trigger warnings would've helped. But also so real and so hopeful despite.
