This book was a beautiful epic fantasy that really pulled me into the world. The world felt real and expansive and lived in. I enjoyed a more concrete magic system with runes and sympathy with some more mystical aspects like the names of things. I really enjoyed a lot about this book but there were somethings that ripped me right out of it.

The treatment of women in this world is really unfortunate. The juxtaposition of how lived in the rest of the world felt and how real the other characters felt like they continued to live on when we were not watching them, and the female characters was jarring to say the least. It really felt like all the female characters existed only to further kvothe's plot, and they ceased to exist when he was not there. When we were not there.

I was also incredibly uncomfortable with one specific conversation in the book.
The way a 30 year old (Deoch) man was discussing a 15 to 17 year old girl (Denna). I do not think any of that conversation was appropriate and I think the book did not address or even consider that it MIGHT be an inappropriate conversation. It was the main character and a good guy, father figure discussing a love interest. That is all the deeper the book went into the conversation.

This would have been 4 stars without that one conversation. The treatment of the other women in the story is the reason for the one star off but that one 2 page conversation was so horrible it is worth another whole star to this review.

This is a wonderful fantasy but if you read it be aware the women are not equals and there is one scene that can ruin an entire book. It really makes me sad because I loved the writing so much.
