quick little read!! an interesting and worthwhile classic you can read in one sitting :)

While this novella is important because of its commentary and analysis of social conventions of the time, I was disgusted by Winterbourne and by the way he objectified Daisy. She could've been such an interesting character, but we'll never know her better because Winterbourne spent so much time saying how damn pretty she was. Disappointing read.

Ladies who talk to men without blushing are indecent but oh, so sexy.

I liked the writing, the way the charcters were drawn. I could never tell if James was critical of winterbourne's attitude (he was critical of her openness and at the same time, eager to exploit it) toward Daisy or not. the ending was abrupt and left a lot of things unresolved though.

Interesting novella describing the manners of the day between upper class society revolving around an American teenage heiress traveling in Europe. I can guess what most of the mores are, but I would like to read an explanation/analysis of it to pick up on what I missed.

classic James

i can't remember when i read this (1996?) or anything about it, really, except that i didn't totally hate it. i gave it a bonus star, because i am pretty sure that it has the word 'miasma' in it.

Not particular remarkable... the theme has been done better (Anna Karenina)
