So . I genuinely dont understand the luke warm reception for this book and i am stunned
Basically this is another year one plot for Batman and i dont know , maybe people expected Frank Miller story or something but this was brilliant in it's own right imo . We have a Batman in his first year as the vigilante and he's trying out various things . The author explored the Bruce Wayne aspect very well , how to create Batman , Bruce had to live with solitude , how Bruce had to cut jobs and shut down his buisnesses and create tax havens and hideouts in name of R&D dept to hide his various bad gadgets , and how a lack of Alfred led him to visit docs and create unbelievable lies to explain injuries .
The aforementioned business shut down led to creation of our Villain in this story , and refreshingly it's neither a big mob honcho nor a costumed over the top plotting maniac , it's your garden variety mellow human who just has hit rock bottom and starts descending down to a psychopathic route .
This year one story does things different, shows the Human persona , grounds the tale in reality in it's portrayal of villainy and the solitude of Bruce Wayne. Plus there's a last act that plays out like a horror movie and damn it's graphic , detailed and scary . This in turn is helped massively by a stellar artwork which is partly inspired by the days of Bruce Timm's Batman the animated series

The second half of the story certainly turns brutal. The almost comical everyman of the first part of the story spirals into a very disturbing killer.
