"Something between a prayer book and a dream journal, dirty as hell, waiting to be passed around among friends." An ode to communal living and the lasting power of queer community, yeeeeah!

An absolutely incredible little book written at the outset of the AIDS epidemic in the United States. Faggots and Their Friends is a tale of community, solidarity, and queer family. The fable elements of this book were adorable and I think Larry Mitchell did a great job of capturing the truth of gay life, especially in the New York underground gay scene of the 70s and 80s. I think this is book is a MUST read for any gay man or really any queer person in general. It is a glimpse into our community’s past, but also our present and reading Faggots and Their Friends has reminded me once again of how grateful I am to be a fag. I felt so ostracized and outcast as a gay man growing up in the Catholic Church, so reading books like this that let me feel like I’m not alone and that my past has been shared by many like me, is heartwarming and beautiful. Once again, read this book if you haven’t.

the whole time i was waiting for some sort of epiphany to hit me

i understand why this book is so highly rated and maybe i am just too dense to understand the deeper meaning of this book (if there even is any) but i was just so confused the whole time?

this book earnt itself 3 stars for effort and the humorous attempt as well as the critiques on capitalism and toxic masculinity.
