Hopeful, essential, and unfortunately timeless.
I highlighted so many parts of this book. So many good reminders of why we fight and why queer joy and life is so important.
“In moments of apparent scarcity, our best defense is to respond with abundance.”

Such an imaginative fable/manifesto. I picked this up because I was curious about reading a queer self-published novel from 1977 that reflected upon that current moment, and I left feeling so emotional about how prescient it is. This is a seminal text. The structure could be a little confusing at times but I ended up loving it.
An amazing, empowering, comforting, and timeless book about queerness. Its mix of myth-making and bohemian revolution still feels relatable and inspiring. I love it. This book is a classic for a reason, and should be on the book shelf in every LGBTQ+ person’s home. An essential read.

Difficult and annoying and confusing for like twenty pages. Almost gave up. Stuck it out. And 😭 I'm lost in this rhythm and flow and feel like I'm in a fairy garden with spice cakes and dancing and flowers. And the world is broken into a simple childlike fairy tale that is so simplistic that it has so much truth in it. And it reminds me of thef feeling I get from reading women who run with wolves. In that these simple words hold so much feeling and meaning. And indescribable. Beyond what is on the page
Lilac is my favorite. And I love how venerated women are, especially because I feel like gay men hate women and that women are part of the problem by fetishizing them, etc etc. but it's so obvious to me that we're on the same team. And I wonder how much misogyny comes from gay men is just a secret destructive way for "men" to create a rift between women and gay men so we can't join together to fight the bad ones.
This makes me feel so distinctly and see it how being queer and living a queer life isn't just about what gender a person you sleep with is. It's a lifestyle. A whole understanding and rejection of heteronormativity and patriarchy. In a lot of ways, Im so deeply sad for men because they are living in such a tiny uncomfortable box. It must be incredibly painful to not feel emotion, to not be vulnerable, to be expected to be powerful/aggressive when you don't want to be. Gender norms just suck dude.
"They all heard the harsh voices and none of them had believed them."

"The fairies know that the earth will not tolerate the men much longer. The earth, scarred and gouged and stripped and bombed, will deny life to the men in order to stop the men. The fairies have left the men's reality in order to destroy it by making a new one."
